As previously posted, I am intending to trailer my boat down through France and Spain to central Portugal. Been talking to the trailer hire guy and he is painting a very gloomy picture, telling me that if the trailer isn't 'registered' separately I'm going to find myself pulled (in Spain) and being pressed for large amounts of money to be allowed to continue.
I read that commercial trailers had to be registered, but not private ones.
Just wondered if anyone has done this trip, or at least towed into Spain, and if they had encountered any problems.
Cheers.

In several European countries trailers have their own registration. I don’t know how they treat GB vehicles with trailers though. As a minimum I’d suggest you need some version of a green card from your insurer to emphasise that the trailer is insured. Have a look at AA/RAC websites for any info on towing abroad.

Have trailered to Spain a number of times. Never got stopped but only went about 40 mins over the border to bay of Rosas.
I seem to recall it was not necessary for foreign visiting trailers, but cannot fully remember. I also recall if your vehicle and trailer total length was over a certain amount. I think 12m. You needed long vehicle plates. My R class and caravan was over 12m. I never put the plates on, just had them incaee i was stopped. My car and boat combo was under 12m

This is the info on DVLA website-

Trailers that have to be registered
You must register your trailer if you will be towing it through these countries.
This applies to all:
  • commercial trailers over 750kg gross weight
  • non-commercial trailers over 3,500kg gross weight
But Spain doesn't ask for any registration-
Countries where you don’t need to register your trailer
You do not need to register trailers that are only used:
  • in the UK
  • for journeys between the UK and Ireland
You also do not need to register trailers used in:
  • Cyprus
  • Liechtenstein
  • Malta
  • Spain
However, you must register trailers to tow them through any country where the rules apply to reach Cyprus, Liechtenstein, Malta or Spain.

So I can't see why there should be a problem (we'll be well under 3500kg)

I trailered a boat all the way through Spain a few years back. No problems at all. It was only a 4.7m boat on a brand new brakes trailer. Maybe I was lucky, but the guardia took no interest at all.
