Anyone reconditioned their own engine circulating pump?

I only ask because I've been looking for a replacement water pump for an Isuzu 42 model 4LC1 engine No. 187868. None of my local dealers is of any help but I did come across 'Engines Direct' in Gloucestershire. They have one in stock but the price (less a bit of discount) is more than £500 plus Vat & carriage! :disgust: They're not interested in an exchange unit so I thought it might be worth having a go myself. Has anyone done this themselves?

If it's just a change of shaft seal and/or bearings then it won't be a difficult job to buy and change them .... but with many water pump designs you will need a press or access to one. The last car pump I tried to service was a few months ago and I tried to do it with a puller rather than a press and ended up breaking the impeller into two pieces. :(

If you can measure the dimensions of bearings and seals - https://www.lancashireseals.co.uk/ will almost certainly provide the required bits at a sensible price.

I rebuilt a Yanmar/Jabsco water pump for under £30. 2 new sealed S/S bearings, new seals with S/S garter springs. Not a difficult job.

For VP owners, good selection of simple easy to follow, short, videos of basic repair tasks.
This one is how to rebuild the raw water pump with the sort of tools most of us actually have in our toolboxes.
No need for fancy extractor tools as you will probably want new impellor anyway.
All kits/bits listed on Ebay, from seals only to entire rebuild kit with bearings.
Cheapskates only
More than once simply turned round that worn face plate, the stamped lettering never caused any problems and located new seals over unworn bits of pump shaft

Any screw heads that break off,the threads in pump body can be drilled out with little care using heat and WD40.
Only real problem ......gaining access to securing bolts. !

I think I must be losing the plot with this thread as almost everyone seems to be going on about seawater pumps whereas I, and I believe the OP, are talking about fresh water recirculating pumps. They are completely different animals.

Circulating pumps aren't that different. Perhaps more need for a press to dismantle/ reassemble them, but ultimately just bearings and seals! Which is what Lancashire seals specialize in.

Please see post #3. :encouragement:

Agree, I tried to rebuild a circulating pump from a car, did the same as Richard, and ended up breaking the impellor. Reason why I posted the link to SP Waterpumps, they specialise in rebuilding engine circulating pumps.
On the other hand, a raw pump is pretty simple and can be dismantled with some basic tools.
The circulating pump needs a decent press to dismantle and rebuild with guaranteed success.
