Looking at a boat on e-bay. Has a three cylinder diesel said to be a Beta, but there are no markings or paperwork. Can anyone identify if it is, and maybe what model? Thanks.

It's certainly Beta-ish but the alternator looks a bit strange. And the raw water pump clearly needs a bit of looking at.

Looks like an early Beta prototype. There are similarities to a Beta engine but some of the parts look unfamiliar.

That is nothing like either of the current 3 cylinder Beta engines apart from the colour.

looks like an American Westerbeke to me. Good engines but hard to get parts this side of the pond.

It's Kubota based - I'm guessing a D722 - on which the Beta 20 is based - but looks like it's been marinised by someone else unless it's a very early model. If you Google "Kubota D722 Marinised" or similar you might be able to find a match. You shouldn't have any problems with parts, at least not the Kubota bits

Prior to the B722, Beta marketed the 3 cyl. B662, 17hp with which my boat was earlier fitted. The engine in the photo has similarities AFAICR although the alternator seems unusual and the heat- exchanger looks smaller but I think Beta may have increased the size at some point.

When it comes to cross referencing Beta and Kubota engines, Beta use BD722, BD622 etc and Kubota use D722. D622 etc. Sadly Beta use their own part numbers for all the Kubota components but you can normally track down the more reasonably priced Kubota bits online or through the myriad of Kubota dealers. Ideally I'd prefer to support Beta but some of the price differences are ridiculous for what in effect is a bit of red paint. There's also loads of non OEM parts for things like starter motors and alternators as Kubota seemingly power half of the world's agriculture and building plant, if you use the D rather than BD prefix. Apologies for the drift!

The alternator is a type that you commonly find on an industrial unit it has a permanent magnet design capable of around 20 amps and a separate solid state regulator this suggest it was marinised and some of the bolt on parts could relate to other models but the integral raw water pump suggests this engine is type for marine use.

Sorry for delayed response. I was told that mine was a 622 - forerunner of (and similar to) the BD722. But if it's a 662, my apologies - anyway, a 3-cylnder and parts availability (Beta and other suppliers) has always been fine; many parts (if not all of the standard maintenance parts that I have wanted) are the same as for the BD722. Good luck - and as others have said, I've always found Beta very helpful on the rare occasions I've needed to contact then.
