I don't want to get into a snake oil argument, just want to know if its available from anyone on here before I buy from a chandlers.

I've been unable to get Soltron for a couple of years now so I'm presently using Startron which, apart from having a suspiciously similar name, seems to do the same job although doubtless some expert will be along presently to tell me I'm wrong

No, I think Startron does a really good job. I've been using it for a couple of years now.

Initially used it in double dose form (as recommended) to clean the tank and the result was amazing. Well a bit of a pain actually, as two filters clogged up in one season and we'd never had one clog before! However, when I removed the remaining fuel from the tank at the end of last season, it was completely clear and the very minor crud on the tank bottom had gone.

I now dose all new (and stored) fuel at the recommended rate to keep things clean.

Would be interested in getting a bottle of this to put into the (full) diesel tank over the winter - Can anyone tlel me where i'd get it? As said, would prefer to buy it from a forumite before a stanger

Why not just go into virtually any chandler and get the Startron? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

It's part of the very good Starbrite range of products, so a good manufacturer.

However I do want to get some advice - I have one of the other kinds of boat with a Volvo 55hp for when the wind don't blow. Now, I got a bad dose of black slime in my tank. Having pumped out about 35 litres of contaminated diesel, I spent to-day with my arm inside the tank (lovely big access hatch and it holds 250 litres - it's a welded-in aluminium tank) with lots of rags, a toothbrush and some paraffin. It's about as clean as I can get it. But what to do next?
I had been using Fuel Set but it doesn't seem to have done the job.
I was thinking about using Soltron, but then I spoke to some-one else who recommended Kathon FP 1.5. It was suggested that Soltron is only effective if you are constantly running the engine as the enzymes need the flow of fuel to the engine and then the return to the tank - not sure why this would be the case.
Anyway, Kathon FP 1.5 is used by commercial vessels to treat contaminated fuel - it only comes in 5 kg quantities at £99 a go.

So just how good is Soltron and does the panel think I should switch and start using it on a regular basis?

I really don't know, its just that it was recommended to me when I first came on this forum and I've used it ever since and never had a problem, whether thats the Soltron doing its job or maybe I've been lucky, I don't know but for the price of it I don't want to take the chance.

Our experience is that we used Soltron for about 4yrs with no problems. Then, suddenly, we get the black slime and filthy filter situation - boat had been lightly used in previous months.
Now on to Marine 16, as mentioned by an earlier poster. So far so good.

As has also been mentioned above, there is a view that one should change treatments from time to time to ensure that the "bug" doesn't reappear.
