Found this underneath the engine, may have been there for some time but cant remember, been racking my brain and cannot think where it has come from? Engine is a Volvo MD22 50hp. Could be something unrelated to the engine but would like to know.

it's a prototype camming-off lever from the Series III bronze Snurble Grip-Thribley. They never worked properly because of the failure to release the induction coil (the curly bit) when the main unit was orientated athwartships to the Earth's magnetic field. They should have been replaced free of charge by the makers, who have moved to Shanghai to concentrate on making stainless steel anchors out of milk bottle tops.

Is the end carbon? If so it could be a brush from an anode to the shaft.

Plank

If there is any evidence of a carbon brush at the non-spring end I'd 2nd that opinion - there would have been two, on either side of the propshaft with an earth wire to the main anode. An attempt to protect the shaft and prop from galvanic couples.
