Anyone know what deals marinas are offering on the Algarve?

Albufeira offered a deal straight away, with an extra 5% at managers discretion. Worked out at £3750 at 1.26 to the pound for my 11.6 mtr boat. Any one know of any better deals?

Unless things have changed dramatically the base prices at Albufeira were the lowest on the Algarve and I certainly got a decent deal from then as did another friend though I think the discounts on offer now seem to be a bit less than I got. It is worth trying for ab it more though you will find the 'manager' is never available when you call so the front office staff will make an offer which always has to be confirmed later. Also getting the actual contract can take some time too as the managers are always very busy. We had a happy time there and felt secure, in fact my wife went back to the boat alone after my heart attack in the UK and felt quite safe on the boat with our small dog. The marina is also very sheltered in the main basin, the very big boats get a bit of wave motion in easterly gales.

Vila Real is rumoured to be cheapest but with the tide running through it can be fun entering and leaving and exposed to gales. Ayamonte is also cheaper than Portuguese marinas but needs dredging.

Depending on boat usage, cheapest option may be to launch out of Bruce's and haul out again when going home, plenty of anchorages between here and Gib.

Can't be exact on the price but I'm fairly sure I paid less than 3800 euros for 10 metres in Portimao Prai da Rocha marina in June this year for 12 months. The invoice is on the boat. It included a 5 or 10% discount if I paid on time but they seem to give that every year to everyone.
I've tried to get deals from them for the last 10 years and never succeeded in getting better than the 5 or 10% they offer to renewing customers. Like most marinas down here they also offer a 9 month deal for the winter months which is substantially less than the 12 month price.

good to meet you and thanks for all the info. Back in October for some maintenance and planning for next year. Swmbo likes the idea of doing the Algarve for a year. Would be nice to be in the water for half terms for visitors to come for a few days so thats why looking for permanent marina thingy.

Hi Stu, nice to put a face to the posts.

Marinas such as Lagos don't go to high season prices until June so the early part of the year isn't too painful in the wallet and would cover Easter and spring bank holiday half terms. One option from then is to leave the boat on a mooring until summer holidays (unless insured with Pants), around 125 p.m I'm told. We'll be home on 24/9 so contact me there if you need any info/phone no's.

Graham.

Thanks again for the info, really really appreciate it. Looking at albufeira, 9 months deals look good, but to take advantage would have to move the boat next month, so question, whats the weather like in Oct? or Jan? Or perhaps we should just do Bruces for this year and then look at Alb next year. It would still mean Alb for 9 months, Bruces for two separate months and the rest on the hook for our 6 week schools hols. it still works out cheaper than a year contract. Other question, Alb talks about a maintenance contract for some of the deals. Do you know what that is please?

Thanks for that info, mine is 11.6 mtrs and P looks dearer than Alb so given that discounts seem to be available the differential wouls still make P more expensive.

No guarantees but Jan has slightly more rain and lower temp. than October. Over the last 25 years Faro averaged rain on 6.6 days in Oct.and 7.4 in Janbut that doesn't mean all day

There are so many options, I think your best bet is to hire a cheap car (see economycarhire.com) when you come in October and check out the marinas and deals from Ayamonte to Lagos. If leaving a boat unattended, I personally would discount Portimao as regular winter storm damage there to marina and boats. Lagos, Albufeira & Ayamonte are the safest.

Winter weather is mild with mainly light winds. However, it can at times be very windy and wet, the airport lost part of its roof a few years ago and a couple of 737s on the apron were spun through 180 degrees! Lagos is windier than Ayamonte.

Just a thought, when we were researching we did it by car, and all we got was the price list but when we arrived in the boat in the marina then the offers were made especially if we made it clear we were quite happy to move on.

Have you converted the figure, or was it 3750euros or 4725? I've just paid 4200euros (11.9mtrs) for ten months at El Rompido inc mulltihull surcharge for a few months.
Presumably a 11.6mtr mono would be cheaper. Mind you as a confirmed DIYer I'd haul at Bruce's yard if AB would fit the travelhoist!!!

Converted at 1.26 i think inc vat.

So 3750 * 1.26 = 4725 euros. Presumably for 12mnths (you don't say) and possibly inc vat. If vat added at ?21% then it's 5717 euros!!
You don't need 12mnths. I suspect you'd creep under 4000euros inc vat at El Rompido for ten months.
They all charge in euros so simpler to use them for comparison. But Alb will have some life in the winter, Rompido will be very quiet.
Doesn't matter if you're not there though!! YPC at Cartagena was a bit cheaper and a very lively Spanish city.

IME the maintenance element is only applied to long (5 and 10 year) contracts.

Maintenance being water and electricity which is normally, - on the Algarve - included in the daily, weekly, monthly, three monthly, six monthly, nine monthly and annual rate.
