Anyone know of a decent quaity diesel fuel filter housing for CAV296 filters?

Have fitted a diesel day tank to avoid fuel filter blockages in rough weather, as I have been getting small deposits starting at the bottom of the main (stainless steel) diesel tank.

Fuel is pumped via filter from main tank up to day tank as required and with a system of changeover valves I have various options for transferring fuel, running off main tank, running off day tank etc.

Fuel being pumped into day tank is currently filtered via a 5-micron CAV296 filter, which as we all know is cheap and does the job on n million tractors worldwide.

Problem is the filter housing for the CAV296. Have tried two cast alloy filter housings ex eBay and although, again, they are cheap - and easy to fit - they aren't completely airtight. That isn't usually a problem on a tractor as the fuel tank is over the engine and this is a gravity feed, so with no pump pressure around there is neither an air ingress problem nor a leak problem. On a boat air ingress is a big problem because of course you then get an airlock in the pump and it de-primes itself.

I know that air is getting in as there are bubbles in the fuel line downstream from the filter. Am not getting a leak round the fuel filter when not in use - so it's only a problem when suction present.

I suspect that it's the way that the seals are designed in the filter housing or the awful banjo fittings. Have tried lots of PTFE tape etc but still no joy. Main engine filter is a Racor which is in a different league of course but the filters and the housing are much more expensive.

Does anyone know of a good quality fuel filter housing that takes CAV 296's?

Many thanks in anticipation of any advice or suggestions.

There isn't a problem normally getting these airtight. It's possible that your eBay bargains are junk, so maybe you might replace with a decent housing from someone like ASAP Supplies. If you have one with a glass bowl, be aware that the large diameter seals are 2 different sizes. Also, it's always worth replacing the O-ring on the stub which the filter fits on to, as well as the tiny O-ring on the central bolt, each time you replace a filter. Rather than PTFE tape, you might try assembling with a diesel-resistant sealant.

Lucas make the original product

Bought out aeons ago by Delphi, who've since suffered their own trauma. Heaven knows who makes 'em now.

Source of good CAV stuff (including spin-on options) here: http://www.thornycroftparts.co.uk
Prices significantly less than ASAP.

Incidentally, I recently discovered that for such a mundane piece of kit, 'CAV' has high-falutin' origins: Charles Anthony Vandervell. Mind you, you'd need a damn big filter housing to write all of that.
