Anyone know of a 12V Drill that comes with a \'car\' adaptor?

Plenty drilling jobs on the boat on a swinging mooring... too many to rely on a drill's battery(/ies). Can't find any 'portable' drills that come with a 12v cigarete lighter working lead etc. (ie. for drilling not charging) - clearly what I need.

Has anyone seen one for sale anywhere - ideally without spending silly money?

Did try & adapt a B&D Quatro at one point - but design difficult to wire safely (ended up shorting), so I'd prefer a purpose-made job.

Yes - I have got a hand drill... but only as an absolute last resort!

If you can find an old 12 volt battery drill, remove the battery, split the battery case and connect a suitable lead with a plug on the other end.

Mine will reach the mast head and still have 3 feet spare wire, I used standard house type cable.

I had no problems wiring up an old B&Q 12v drill for use on my boat. I removed the batteries from the battery pack, drilled a hole in the battey pack base, fitted a 2 core cable with a knot inside so it didn't pull through and soldered the wires to the original contacts. If I remember correctly I did have to jam a piece of wood into the pack to keep the terminals in place. Then a 12v car plug and a 12v socket wired into the boat and it works a treat. You could always fit crocodile clips and fix directly to your battery as a temporary solution. I picked up the 12v drill at a carboot sale for £1 as it didn't have a charger and the battery was knackered. As I already had a similar 12v drill at home I was familiar with it. It now stays on the boat permanently in it's case with a set of drills and bits.

Not seen a dedicated 12V cabled drill and it really should not be too difficult to modify a battery one such that it does not short,. Take the old drill battery to pieces, remove the Ni Cads and attach the cables to the terminals that way it could still be used with a battery if required.

I have a Ryobi One+ drill here which has a 12V one hour charger available (Look at chargers and batteries)as well as a full range of power tools which run on the same battery: Vacuum cleaner, light, jig saw, circular saw, caulking gun amongst others. I have the drill, jig saw, light and vauum cleaner all of which I have been quite impressed with.

Homebase have a 12v Black & Decker drill with a recharging lead to plug in, as well as the battery attached to the butt of the grip.
I have wired an ebay fag plug onto the adapter (standard size amazingly) and will use this as my electric keel winch winder, as it has 5 torque settings and forward/reverse..

£18.99 just before Xmas. I will post the model number when I get home.

The 10.8v Lithium Ion tools by Bosch and/or Durospin charge in 15 minutes via an in-car "cigar lighter" charger. The Duraspin's are a better prospect becuase of the chuck arrangement and it comes with two batteries. Very handy tool to keep on board. Good quality. Look to pay about 110 + VAT

I have an old B&Q 18v drill with dead batteries.

Any issues with wiring up an 18v drill to a 12v system??

I wired a 9v. Screwfix 'cheapie', exactly the same way as Dickh.. It goes like the clappers. Your 18v. may run slow.
