Just bought an ICOM 505 off ebay. Oh the joy of owning a Boat

It starts up OK and seems to transmit but I get no response from anyone.

I have tried all channels asking for a radio check would this be normal if I am in Sheffield?

Second, the Mic is acting like a speaker I can hear the squelch coming out the same as the speaker and the PTT TX seems to work but all the other buttons on the Mic up-down channel Hi/Lo buttons do not work.

Does anyone know about this Transmitter?
I have spent some time on the Manual but see nothing that says the Mic will act like a speaker?
Is their any way to test its operation
Cheers
PS is there anyone around the Sheffield Hull area that could service this?

If you have the Command Mic version then it is both microphone and speaker (from memory).

I would not expect to receive a response to transmissions if I was in Sheffield.

Icom UK has a good reputation for supporting their equipment, i‘ve sent stuff for repair and had excellent service. Icom Support - Icom UK

It seems to be a normal Mic see image Hard wired in though very load sound out of it at the same time as the speaker

I doubt you will get any response to a radio check if you are testing it in Sheffield - not too many marine vhf users there. Need to try on the coast or at least a navigable river used by leisure boaters.

Some early ICOMs had a known problem with a component failing in the receiver.
This would prevent you from hearing anything unless it was on your doorstep.
You will probably need to find somebody with marine radio and do a check to confirm if the above is in fact your problem.
Might be worth putting the radio on scan to see if it picks up anything at all on any of the channels.
