Anyone interested in Celestial Navigation?

I've got two Ebbco sextants.

I live 100m from the beach so I want to take a noon-site and see what latitude I am on.:giggle:

I've got an ebbco sextant too (wine fuelled pointless eBay purchase years ago) - over lockdown 2020 I dug it out and used the saucepan of water as an artificial horizon job, that coupled with a an asto calculator app on my phone and I calculated my position to within 5miles own first attempt.

You never know, I might one day buy all the tables/celestial almanacs, sit down and learn the maths too. Hopefully not in lockdown...

Yes, alcohol an online market places don't mix!?

I've always wanted a Citroen Light 15 (or Normale) . One night (wine fueled) I bought one in NZ (at a fairly good price) but I hadn't considered freight. I sweated for 24 hours but then some local NZ guy put in a winning bid with about ten minutes to go. Phew!! ?

Well that is interesting, thank you! I guess I have fewer excuses! - do you find it's best to print off and work through a paper copy or does an on screen pdf work just as well ?
I find it best to download the article rather than copy the link. Quite often you can use the link at a later date and find the article has been removed.

Back in the day, my friend had just passed his test and wanted an old car. He was offered the choice of one of those or a Ford Anglia. He chose the Ford!

The best resource I found was on YouTube. Much better than the various other resources I tried. All the others were too obsessed with terminology and such to actually teach anything useful. I just bought the new book by Phil Somerville which claims not to do things that way and then proceeds to do it the same way. It's a surprisingly easy subject made hard by bad teaching.

Some good links above, thanks.
Part one of Celestial Navigation made easy by Tippecanoeboats is excellent but I couldn't get to grips with the second part.
David Burch's home study course is the best I have found, link here

Celestial Navigation: A Complete Home Study Course, Second Edition eBook : Burch, David, Burch, Tobias: Amazon.co.uk: Books

Also the series on Youtube, link below. If you go back to the beginning of the series you will find it straightforward and easy to follow.

PS - Jupiter is lovely in the south/south east just now!
All the best,
Chris

Anyone know a good place to buy a sensible new of pre abused sextant. I sold my old plastic Davis 15 with my last yacht.
