Anyone in the Solent today?

There was one parked across the channel at Falmouth (St Mawes side) when we arrived. Regal Princess, much larger beast than PoW yet couldn’t manage the easterlies in the bay and blocking the channel was the “only option”.

We’ve seen PoW and Rob going and out on many occasions when berthed at Haslar. I actually find the entry lights more interesting than the ships these days. There’s a YT video of how they navigate the entrance that’s interesting.
Anyone not local, if you approach the harbour and there are yachts just milling around, it might be that the entrance is closed for the carriers to manoeuvre so approach slowly!
Does KHM make vhf broadcasts about harbour entrance closed for carrier movements? Its promulgated on their Web page, but I doubt many people bother looking. Or look at harbour rules in their pilot book or electronic equivalent.,

Yes they do announce such movements on VHF. They also announce when the triple transit beacons (KHM refer to them as military beacons) will be illuminated for either the entry or departure of one of the carriers. As part of the VHF announcement they state that these should not be used for navigation! (For Joe Public that is).

Thanks. I've not sailed out of Pompey for ages. Wondered how the modern KHM regulations are applied.

Yes Portsmouth VTS (no longer KHM) as well as CG. Sadly it’s a busy area so many won’t be listening, and visitors often don’t listen on VTS. Normally I wouldn’t give a warning but the Navy can be quite abrupt and coming upon the bows of the carrier is a bit unsettling 🤣

Edit: should have finished reading the thread. Sorry for repeating

I don’t think many here begrudge them a bit of sea room.

Being underneath a carrier is far more exciting!

Just by the way KHM on vhf channel 11 are going to start calling themselves "Portsmouth VTS" from 1st May.
The skipper of a boat I was on a few weeks ago almost broke out in tears when he heard the news, but his stiff upper lip saved the day.

Usually sailing out of Plymouth I find Longroom easier to say that KHM when reaching the calling point and look forward to saying Portsmouth VTS, by the way we now have a Poole VTS.

Poole VTS has been around for many years. Quite interesting listening to the ships and Sandbanks ferry discussing which side the ferry will be on.

Also Dover Port Control changed their name to Dover VTS last year but nobody told Reeds. To my mind none of these were broke - I dont see why they had to fix them.

According to the Portsmouth LNTM it's just a matter of standardisation rather than suggesting anything was broken.

This change has been made to align with IALA Guideline G1083 on standard nomenclature to identify and refer to a VTS. Designated VTS Centres in the UK are listed in MSN 1796.

Edit: sorry I'm duplicating what Lucky Duck has already said above but I hadn't noticed it.
