We're thinking about relocating from the Deben and like the idea of the family activities and cruises in company run by RHYC. Our youngest is two so it's strictly pontoon for us. I know others have done moorings with little children but a F6 Friday evening in April with a toddler getting to a boat on a buoy is not for us! What's RHYC like, anyone know the membership and marina fees? Are they welcoming new members at the moment?

The Club’s office will bill berth holders for settlement by 31st January 2014. Please note that the return of this form is a commitment to proceed with the purchase of a berth in 2014.
Berth Charges
Charges are calculated to the nearest 0.1 metre
1. Licence holders £196 per metre
2. Debenture Holders £25.00 per annum
3. Dinghies and tenders alongside the boardwalk section: £250 per annum to 2.5 m
£370 per annum 2.5m to 4.2m
£620 per annum 4.2m to 5m max
4. Ajax £1020 per annum
INSURANCE
Under the terms of Debenture and Annual Licence Holder’s agreements all boats must carry Third Party Liability insurance with a minimum limit of £2,000,000. Berths are conditional upon insurance policies remaining in place at all times. Please advise the details of your current insurance below.

Terms and Conditions
In applying for a berth, applicants are deemed to have accepted the terms and conditions contained within the Debenture and Annual Licence Holder’s agreement, including the requirement to vacate the berth to facilitate dredging and maintenance as and when requested by the Marina Committee
Boat keys
Please note that boat keys left at the Club remain the berth holder’s responsibility.

What sailorman has not said is that we are always ready to welcome new members and especially families. We are a very friendly club with a wide range of sailing and social activities to suit all ages and interests. However there is a significant waiting list for berths on the club marina, and you do naturally have to be a member to get on the list.

The list of marina fees is correct, but the oddly very low fee for debenture holders is only for one more year when the debentures expire and everyone will be a licence holder paying the full amount.

The waiting time is unpredictable as it depends on the size of your boat, if for example there are 20 people on the list with 38ft plus yachts and a space becomes vacant for a 25 footer then the first one of that size will get lucky.

Thank you, that's all very helpful. It does sort of rule it out for us, we can't be members whilst we wait a few years for a marina berth because the boat's in Woodbridge so we'd never get to the club; the marina is obviously a natural progression for those who've put their time in by being on a club buoy and that makes sense. We'll have to look elsewhere. Shotley, SYH and Wollverstone may be out of our price bracket. Any other suggestions?

Prices for most marinas on the Orwell (Shotley, SYH, Fox's, Neptune, Haven) are pretty similar. We've found that give or take £150 p/a there isn't much difference between them. A cynic could almost suspect collusion. :rolleyes:

RHYC somewhat cheaper, but there's a waiting list, spaces are limited and IMO only an option if you're a 'club minded' sort. Nothing wrong with that, but not everyone is.
Woolverstone (an MDL marina) the most expensive of the lot - south coast prices on the east coast. Can't figure out what the attraction of the place is.

green from the trees,small berths, busy
tide flowing through, most expensive
work hbr with good facilities + easy access
cheapo up a cut
soul less but near the town + a lock

Agree in principle, but Levington is a long way round and Shotley takes a surprising time. It's £1800pa where we are. What we can't do is day sails, tidal access is HW+-2hr. Fine for a two day but not for a day. No sailing club which we'd like, I guess we'll have to wait until the nippers are older and start using a buoy. Does RHYC charge the same for bouys?

Yes, Shotley is 15 minutes or so down the road, but it's right on the harbour, so you have immediate access to either the Orwell or the Stour. For lazy sailors, having the choice of 2 rivers at roughly 90 degrees to each other is great! And if you want to go to sea, it's much quicker to drive to Shotley than to sail down the river.

Would it be possible to have the boat on a mooring at Rhyc and just use visitors pontoon to collect family and vice versa upon return ? , that's is what we do , I go get boat either on my own or with son and just collect /drop off women .
I'm still at mercy of tide as the pontoon at Brandy hole is aground at low water even if boat isn't ..
 
I thought about that but what if it cuts up rough at the end of the w/e - I've got to get the boat back onto the mooring by myself, possible but...
