I've been looking at a "salty dog" today....

Feels a little caravanny (in a good way) with a bit more sportiness, than a centaur?

I can't seem to find much info about it - Some people say it's a Colvic salty dog, and others say it's a boat from Salty Boats in Essex or something..

Anyone know much about them, or seen reviews or anything?

I've never sailed one, but I recall they had a good enough reputation.

Not sure if was originally built by Colvic, or like others taken over by them later, I think the latter is the case.

There was also a Salty Pup, 23' I seem to remember.

there was a salty yachts outfit in newport gwent - still is for that matter but no longer producing boats. I heard they were solid boats leaning towards motorsail.

Late 1970s to mid 80s - moulded by Colvic (usual low tech but generally sound construction) and fitted out by Salty Yachts, though some may aslo be home fit-outs. Quite modern lines, not dissimilar to a Leisure 27 at a glance and reasonably good sailing performance, certainly faster than a Centaur and definitely not a motorsailer - they usually only had a 6-7 hp engine.

Easy to confuse the Sea Dog with the Salty Dog yachts which are very different designs; The Salty Dog (unlike the heavyweight Sea Dog) is a comparatively lightweight with slim lines and fairly agile, I think they came with a choice of twin or fin keel.

There's a couple of twin keel Salty Dogs at our club. They typically finish first and second in our club races, and do well in their class at races at other clubs too.

Designer was Peter Milne. Not known for slow boats - Fireball was one of his. Many were sold as kits so finish will vary, but should be a good performer for its size.
