Anyone have a diagnostic tool i can borrow?

Hi

I am based in Swansea and desperately need a diagnostic reader for my Mercruiser D-Tronic 4.2 250hp engine. Or if anyone knows how, to get the codes via the LED trick.

I have hit a wall as this engine although it will blink the codes via LED, it uses a non standard 4 pin DIN plug for the diagnostic cable, which a converter cable is used to connect up to the likes of things like the RINDA Tech Pro, or DIACOM system.

It seems obvious you can bridge certain pins to put it into diagnostic mode but I don't know which ones and I certainly don't want to guess!

Can anyone offer any assistance to loan me a tool to read the codes or help with reading the codes via a blinking LED for the code numbers.

There seems to be nothing on google for this engine.

Request is for help on Mercruisr engine, i assume used inboard on a boat. no problem i can see being in our forum surely?

I can't help with reader or LED trick, suggest try a Murcruiser agent.

Perhaps relate what the faults or symptoms being experienced are? We have some very experienced members in here so worth a punt

Why not stick this post over on the mobo forum as there are some serious petrol (diesel even :rolleyes:) whizzos over there.

We don't tend to go much above 100hp in this part of the world.

This link might help, at leadt offer some info you might not have.

I'd say looks an expensive bit of kit, not many would lend ti a freind let alone a stranger.

While i wish you all luck, it would likely be more expedient to use a trained mechanic, who will spot things the diagnostic tool can't, and interpret the fault codes with far greater accuracy likely saving you money.

Meant to add, do not blindly short pin's as severe and likely expensive damaged could occur to the ECU.

Definitely post on the Motorboat forum - there are a couple of people on there with that kind of kit although mostly South Coast. Most in here get spooked by engine electrics more complicated than a relay :)

Oh have i posted to the wrong forum by accident? I had seen a lot of posts in relation to the engine on here through searches, which is how I ended up here :)

Its Bayliner 288 with an inboard the engine will not rev past 3000rpm even in neutral when its rated for 3800rpm. Hits an electronic rev limiter, so in some kind of limp mode, just trying to figure out what sensor is the culprit.
 
I think the original response was a comment on the higher technical degree ti duscuss, of your first post asking to borrow what is likely a fairly expensive bit of kit from total strangers.

My trade is electronics based, i will not lend my cheapest test instruments even to ofher 'engineers'. I make a living from my equipment and knowing how to use them, so why would i risk having them broken by someone who might have no idea how to use them properly?

To me the engine rev limiting due to a detected fault, i would think revs would be far lower at about 800 rom.

It could point to a blocked up emissions sensor, perhaps a faulty injector or lift pump issue. has it been serviced recently and all filters and oil been replaced?

Although the title doesn't say so, this forum is mostly about sailing boats. Sailing boat people often seem to have engine trouble, but they're small, very basic, and mostly either quite old or at least to an old-fashioned design. None of the normal sailing-yacht engines are electronically controlled like yours, so people here are unlikely to be able to help.

No problem at all with posting in the "wrong place", just saying you're more likely to get useful advice from the Mobo folk :)
