I am asking as on their website they have a picture of a large luxury motor yacht they "disposed of" The same hulk has been sitting anchored in the "paddling pool" on the Itchen for a long time. I was wondering if it was just unloaded there by them and left, or if it was part of an ongoing deconstruction. Nothing has changed on it for quite a while. It would make sense to strip it in those sheltered shallow waters I guess, but progress seems to have halted.

Over here... there an outfit that was promoting grinding up GRP boats and using the result for road surfaces. Catch, as usual, is it needs govmint to fund it, as it is not economic. The blokes that surface roads have it well sorted.

Looked at the site, sounded good, except....

They offer a service to scrap boats for a fee. Some of these boats then get sold on. All ways wondered how the former owners felt seeing the boat they paid to scrap being sold on. Seams a little odd.

As somebody who has just given away a boat my other option was to scrap it and I would have been completely delighted to see them sell it on so somebody could have carried on enjoying it - especially with a brand new inboard engine. My other alternative for too many years had been to keep paying 2.5k per year on marina fees and endless hours and money on basic maintenance whilst never sailing the boat.

Was that this one?

Don't have any idea of there is any connection, but 100 yards from the hulk is a locked compound that is a de facto grp hull scrapyard...Half a dozen wrecked grp boats and some old moulds

Nothing odd about it at all. Recycling, Reuse, a great thing to do.

yes its a really good concept, and one we were about to avail ourselves of, until I saw pics of Kahu on their website, going off for "disposal" by them... Maybe they are just storing it there for a (LONG LONG) while before breaking it up?

I spoke to them. The chap said they disposed of it, as per the pics on the site, then when I said it is dumped in the river he said it was his mistake, they didn't get involved or dispose of it. Maybe they didn't get involved in the end? So once again, I am on the hunt for some reliable grp scrapper. Does anyone have any direct experience of anyone in that line? Seems like a poison chalice indeed.

Lakesailor, late of this site, chopped a grp boat up with a chainsaw, then portioned it out to the skips. Seeme to remember it was a small cruiser, sub 20ft.

I have seen grp boats broken up with a digger, surprising how much timber and metal were taken out leaving not a lot of bulk once a bit of agression was used. the entire fitted into a smallish skip, 25ft boat.

Also if a small boat perhaps advertise as a childs play house.... removed keel and engine will get a few quid in scrap metal...

angle grinder, concrete saw, sabre saw ... will all cut up pretty quickly...

I have just (sadly) cut up a 29’ grp yacht. It took me and a mate three days with a recip saw and 4” grinder ( lots of blades and discs) fully kitted out with RPE and disposable suits. We cut it up small enough that ALL the pieces fitted into a 12 yard skip. I have lots of stanchions pullpit pushpit etc if anyone wants? Very sad job but after three years of trying to give her away …tried to upload a photo but unable to get it to work …nobody really wanted to see the demise of another mans dream anyway …did they?
