We went out there sailing with friends a couple of years ago. We were in the marina just beside Waikiki beach. Oahu is OK but Kuaui is gorgeous. We sailed from Oahu to Kuaui and it was quite an experience - nice and sheltered in the lee of Oahu and then once in the Kuaui channel the wind went from nothing to F7 like someone had switched a fan on. Huge seas but VERY long wavelength. We were on a 56' ketch, steel hull but franky it seemed as though we were on a submarine most of the time with huge waves breaking over the bow and rolling down the deck. We moored at Nawilliwilli harbour (harbor!) and went and enjoyed Kalapakki beach which is GLORIOUS. We preferred Kuaui to Oahu so make sure you visit the other islands whilst you are there.

Thanks for the info Rob. We are going Ski-ing to Vail in Colorado in January for a week then on to Los Angeles, we have also decided to pop over to Honolulu whilst we are over that way, hence the question. We will be staying in the Sheraton Beach resort on Waikiki beach and would like to do some boating. From what you have said I will have some enquiries done regarding a visit to Kuaui, we are only there for a week but would like to get the most from it. I have heard that Honolulu is not all that it is made out to be due to the increase in tourism, so perhaps Kuaui may be nice for a few days R&R. Cheers.

Re: Brilliant!!

I think you have an idea where it is now from the replies. Sorry perhaps I should have explained a bit better.

Hi Pete

Been some time since I went to Hawaii, but one visit I'll always remember was to Pearl Harbour and the associated memorials. I expect it's changed a bit, but probably still worth a visit. Have fun. great place. If you're there over new year, it's a riot!!

OK Rob, you have done me in /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif SWMBO has now booked us in the Sheraton Kuaui resort and AMEX have done the flights from Honolulu, ONLY 30 mins flying time. Errr, but it is another $160 bucks a night more ($545 ++ a night !!!!!!!!!!!) plus the extra flights, it was all going well till she read your post /forums/images/icons/wink.gif Anyway I am sure it will be brilliant, I will let you know how we get on, thanks for the advice /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
