Anyone got a Bavaria 38 or 39 or similar fitted with a 29hp engine?

I have a 10.10 meter (33 feet in old money) boat and the 18hp engine pushes her along quite happily at 6 knots in a choppy sea 2 meter sea. Don't ask how I know. :)

Personally, I find the race for bigger hp engines somewhat surprising as the weight of sailing vessels drops.

While displacement in general did fall as lighter, high volume boats became more popular, the trend is now going the other way, particularly if you are using LOA as the base. As I explained earlier my new type 33 is the same displacement as my previous 37 (which was in fact over 38' long). The older Bavarias in the 32-34' range all had displacement about 1 tonne less than the current boat and usually had a 20hp engine rather than the now common 30.

You will find much the same pattern with other makes as well as overhangs are being chopped off and hulls become fatter and wider.

We have a 1999 Bav 38, which is probably touching 9 tonnes in cruising trim and motors just fine with the 29hp MD2030. Will submerge the sugar scoop at below full chat, at which point you're already trying to exceed the hull speed. Not noticed any problems motoring into wind and seas, but can't really recall any attempting to do so, as if there's the wind for it, we'll be sailing.
