On the boat at DB Marine bt Cookham Bridge yesterday & watched with awe a small GRP dingy with a small outboard launched at the slipway at the Ferry.

The river was running as fast as I`ve seen in 10 years.
Dingy launched from trailor (with 5 people to hold the rope) and then watched 6, yes 6 people climb in, including young kids.

Not a life jacket or bouyancy aid in sight.

The water was 6" from swampimg the boat & they pushed into the stream & hurtled towards the lock cut ( just missing the weir stream) and dissapeared from view

God knows what the lock keeper told them - if they made it

What is it with these idiots?

OMG...... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Surely there must be a law against such stupidity, even child cruelty? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

See it all the time ....

9 gates open on the weir and still the skiffs row up there , or even worse , the upriver ones turn across the weir while the roller sluices are running ....

On a late shift over the winter , we had a lot of gates running , the weir stream was running literally at about 8 knots and i watched a little GRP dinghy with 4 people and a 4 hp outboard struggle up the weirstream to The Anglers , took about 20 mins to get from the end of the lock to the pub ( 500 yards )

Then at about 10.30 , pitch black , no lights , the same dinghy and 4 people came back at warp 9....

How no one was killed that day , i don't know ....

It\'s a river, innit??

and accordingly 'cos it's not at sea - therefore safe (NOT).

Logic is I suppose - I can see both banks; it's good old Father Thames, people have fun on it in the summer, I can swim; must be OK....

Or more likely - want to go to the pub, can't be bottomed to walk, so take the boat.

As I get older (p'raps that's the problem), I feel that the next generation(s) down have a complete lack of common sense, and that's not limited to actions on the water:-

Cyclists at night in the country with no lights on at all.
Folk crossing the road at anytime - usually in the gloaming in dark clothes, step out - as soon as foot touches the surface, assume they have total right of way and hence can amble across regardless of any vehicle using the road.

and on
and on,
and on.

Devil take the hindmost, and anyway the NHS will repair you.

well, it's a poo day so I'm entitled to have a minor rant, but to me it's not a rant merely sadness for my fellow people-kind.

(Swigs mug of tea and runs spell checker)

Gee, I was down at DB marine on Thursday....never seen the river so fast...waiting for out boat to be lifted for service/antifoul/spring clean...I guess your boat is just in front of ours...The Govenor? Ours is Sea Breeze, the Sealine...

A couple of the devizes boys almost bought it yesterday ....

Turned their canoe over in front of the open weir at Teddington , the lifeboat rescued them from the booms which they had prudently grabbed before they were swept over the weir .... proper cold and miserable ...

Been paddling for 900 hours non stop apparently /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif The canoe was found at Richmond this morning ....

Andrew, where did you get your curry in Hampton ? Not the Riverside Tandoori ?
