We have them on our new boat and they are driving me mad. I am trying to find out how to show a ground based trip log so I can write up our passages.

Every plotter I have had has been able to do this but I can't find my way to do this with these Raymarine plotters.

I did manage to get a log on to the data bar but it would just show zero.

Can anyone help?

If it's an E120 Classic, if I'm understanding you correctly you want to start a track. The log display in the databar would typically be showing the log distance from the paddle wheel.

That might be a problem as there is no log paddle wheel fitted on this boat. That could explain why the log display in the databar displays zero.

Even if there were a paddle wheel log fitted, I don't think it would be accurate enough to tell me how far over the ground I have traveled. The GPS would be accurate and I was hoping the E120 or E80 could tell me how far each passage has actually covered over the ground. I am now guessing the Raymarine equipment cannot do this.

This is quite a useful piece of information as over time you can built up a very accurate figure for fuel consumption in terms of litres per nautical mile, as well as having a lot of useful information on repeat trips

I guess I may have to buy a cheap stand alone GPS device to measure these distances.

My recollection (from my C120 Classic) is that you start a new track. This then records your position over the ground and you can then view/download the data as desired.

It should be possible, just requires some time in the menu, my A series 70D records log from the GPS as I don't have a paddle wheel, it gives two logs, total distance and distance this trip

There are 4 different trip logs plus an overall odometer. You have to go into the main menu. Off the top of my head I can't exactly remember how to get in without the unit in front of me. Where are you based?

Yep, true. The E120 and C classic work in a similar way. The log needs to be turned on to create a track very similar to the old RL pathfinder series. You can configure the frequency of plot of track every 30 secs to even 10 mins and of course the resolution reduces. The data bar can be set up to display all items but not all at once due to physical size. Also you can select various screen window displays from menu or even configure a favourite / personal screen to display log data.

I hate to say this but it's in the manual. :ambivalence: It's best to play with the MF display while the manual is at hand. It will also run Navionics Gold or Platinum cart's too.
Good unit, once you get used to it. I was sorry to lose mine when I changed the boat.

Enjoy. :encouragement:

Go to the displays standard chart display view, and where the speed and direction are displayed on a grey bar at the top, press on this section and a drop down should appear with a set of logs, of which some can be reset and other permanently keeping a log.

The resets are found through the menu system.

If we are talking about classic displays the procedure is as follows. First, if it is not showing a ground trip log in the data bar, you need to add it. Go to menu, databar setup, configure, then choose 'add data' from the bottom menu, then choose vessel, scroll down to ground trip 1, then across to numeric and press ok.
The ground trip will now appear in the data bar.
To zero it before each trip go to menu, system setup, ground trip reset and across to ground trip 1 reset. Press ok and it will ask you to conform yes or no at the bottom of the screen. Press yes and the trip is set back to zero.
Sounds much more complicated than it is and in reality takes about 20 seconds to reset each time.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Solitaire - we are mid week members of the above the bridge club on the Hamble

RogerRat - I have been through that blasted manual (E Series Networked Display Reference Manual 81244_1) several times now and can't find any reference to a GPS log, let alone four of them

2013PrincessV39 - I'm not on the boat now but from what I recall, there is no grey bar at the top with speed and direction, just details of the scale and orientation of the chart. Boat location and depth etc are shown on the databar which can be placed across the top of the screen but I recall it as being white.

Neale - thanks for that - I did pretty much do what you have suggested and managed to get a log and a trip on the databar but they stayed at zero during our last trip. I wonder if I have set it up for a paddle wheel log (which we don't have) and maybe not scrolled down far enough to get to the ground log. We are on the boat briefly on Saturday so I will have annother go then. Will post back.

Yes there is an option for adding a 'log trip' . Make sure you choose one of the 'ground trip' options. It will give you GPS distance over ground.

Hi all
Its still not working I'm afraid. These are the only option I get under vessel and as you see its on the databar but records nothing.

Since many posters say they can get (up to 4) ground logs, it got me thinking that maybe the MFD is not running a recent enough release of software. Looking at this screen I assume that App version on my MFD's (showing v2.30) is the thing I am looking for and it seems that the latest release from the Raymarine site for my E120 and E80 http://www.raymarine.co.uk/view/?id=3753 is v5.69

So..... Has anyone done an upgrade like this from the Raymarine website? Is it something I could attempt myself? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Cheers
Richard

Hi Richard,

I had similar problem with my A70D plotter, and when I contacted Raymarine, they sent me this info:-

"The Log trip is the resettable trip distance as recorded by the speed through the water transducer and is the distance as measured through the water – rather like the trip meter in a car
The Log is the total distance travelled through the water since the equipment was installed and is not resettable – like the main odeometer in a car
Trip refers to a resettable distance either water or ground based
Ground Log/ Trip1 refers to the GPS derived trip distance, there are several – hence Trip 1 and this refers to the ground trip or in other words the ground based trip and is resettable
The Ground log is the total distance as measured over the ground derived from the GPS

Basically there are two alternatives, one measured through the water and one measured over the ground – they will be different due to currents, leeway and tidal effects."

After playing around with my A70D menus, I found the four ground trip records are reset by pressing the menu button when the screen is displaying a chart, and scrolling down to the set-up option, under which you can find the four ground trip resets.

The log trip is reset by pressing the menu button when the screen is displaying the fish finder display, and choosing the fish finder set-up option, and scroll down to the transducer option, under which you can find the log trip counter reset.

Looking at your E menus, they look very similar to my A70D ones, so I wouldn't be surprised if they have the same functions.

By the way, my A70D has an inbuilt GPS, and is connected to an Airmar P58 triducer (speed, depth & water temp).

Hope this may be of assistance.

Cheers, Allan

Richard, the software version you are running usually comes up on he opening screen when you power up. I am not sure if this is the same as the 'App version' that you are looking at. Maybe power it up and check. If you are running an old version then it is definitely worth updating.

Updating is easy peasy but you do lose all your routes and waypoints. These can be backed up first on a CF card and then re-uploaded afterwards.

If you are still having trouble in August when I see you, I'm sure I can sort it out for you. Think I have a copy of the latest software on a CF card here somewhere so I can bring it along if ness.

In fact looking closer, the September 14 2005 build time for the app on the MFD agrees with the Sep 05 release date for version 2.30 on the Raymarine website so I have just ordered a card reader and 128MB CF card and will have a go at the upgrade to version 5.69. Fingers crossed!
