I think I'm pretty much sold on sticking to cable and just replacing the cables and conduits, and possibly bearings on the drum. Thank you all.

Glad to note no one has suggested rod. An absolute nightmare to diagnose if it fails. Experience based on near total failure crossing the Channel lanes with a load of sea cadets on board.
