anyone ever done the sunsail delivery trip Canaries to Gib????

Re: thoughts

nope not done it with sunsail but

1 Negative 1 althou the prevailies are with you in march, the fixed schedule (is it a week they allow? - or two?) could potentially mean going in less than ideal conditions.

2. Negative 2 sunsail boats are heavilty used. they might be ok, might not. I'd take wetweather gear, personal vhf and strobe light beacon and handheld gps for starters.

3. Negative/positive . A huge degree of the enjoyment must depend on the people with whom, you make the passge. No choice in this!

4. Megapositive : sailing to the rock is a must-do experience.

Flights back from Gib can be delayed with haze and so on, and some are ded expensive. Flights from malaga are dirt cheap (like £10 if yu book now - there's a seat sale til tuesday pm eith easyjet) and more relaible with less haze etc. rent a car from just ouotside the border with gib (not from gib itself, walk over the border then rent from there, via web i use Avis probly listed under La Linea ) and £50 takes it to malaga. Bet there's a bus too - the autopista is pretty quick 2hours slow, 50 minutes nailing it a bit. Much better if they go on from gib to a more malaga-convenient harbour i reckon....

Re: thoughts

they allow two weeks so plenty of time.....foulies vhf etc won't be prob...just wonder if anyone has done a sunsail delivery exp that one...sounds intresting anyway..

I know the skipper who did the trip out from Croatia to Canaries at back end of the year. He should be back in UK next week you can PM him under the name of "Sonic" hopefully he will fill you in with details...however may be a bit biased towards Sunsail...!!!!!

Re: thoughts

With regard to the boats being heavily used, I used to work for a charter company and though the boats are heavily used they are heavily maintained. If anything's not right on board it's fixed ASAP 'cos you can't charter out a broken boat to people who are paying good money.

The boats have to meet the safety spec for charter, so even if the boat's a bit worn and dog eared on furnishings and deck fittings you should still be OK.

In addition, there should be a lead crew on hand to perform any minor repairs.

\"can\'t charter a boat to people paying good money\"

oh yes they can sir, and they do. Sunsail anyway - perhaps yours was different, and it sounds like it.

My (un)favourite personal sunsail experience was the bilge pump jammed with sawdust which together with a loose exhaust hose meant the boat (nearly) sank itself as we motored along.

This year... no gps, no log means er no real nav, and a quickjamming mainsail furling mechanism all took until after we departed to discover. I did catch the pathetic toolkit (erm ok, well how about a hammer at least, for the softwood plugs, i asked...) no spare gas, no dinghy pump, which i also caught and they sorted before we left. But no fireblanket near the cooker ("it depends where the boat is registered") and no ships papers (we'll bring them out to you, it's christmas) and no manual for the boat ("really? well that's not good enough"....) and 2-3 months weed/barncle growth over the hull. Oh yes, and altho they promise to include snorkels, none of them fitted grownups, praps thiv all been lost or pinched, altho they did come along (but on the 2nd to last day). "Heavy meaintence" eh, don't make me laugh. They CAN and DO rent poorly-maintained boats, fine for coastal crusing, potentially dodgy for an ocean passage. Anyway, clients have already paid, so what to do? Walk off the boat? Here's a good one - client signs all sorts of forms abiout how to bring the boat back full of fuel and woe betide etc etc ....but then when i turned the thing on, the fuel level was down to the red line! I am guessing that the boat we got had been brought down from the BVI and left quietly for a couple of months, never taken out.

Anyway, I have decided that instead of complaining to HO, which risks them offering money off the next holiday hence the nightmare starting again i have decided to NOT to complain which will mean i won't feel that i have to charter with sunsail ever EVER again. Hooray!

Re: \"can\'t charter a boat to people paying good money\"

ahhh so any sailing schools do anything similar then??? might get around the dodgy boat thing...??

Re: \"can\'t charter a boat to people paying good money\"

Blimey! That was a most articulate and informative reply!

I have referred to Sunsail once before by the name they are colloquially called due to their reputation, but it was Kimmerised.

However, my only objection to your post is that you refer to me as 'Sir'.

Please don't call me Sir - some of us have to work for a living!

;-)

If you are doing a Sunsail delivery, you are probably doing it with the outfit "Professional Yacht Delivery" (PYD). Watch yourself ... they may treat a client okay but in my experience they treat their crew like expendable slaves once the job is done. The word "professional" do not come to mind.
