Anyone else prone to allowing bits to fall off their boat?

Kicking myself as I'd recently reseated the TV dome after it came away from its mounting on a previous trip and also fitted some nice shiny original AFI dual horns. Both of which became detached from the radar arch on the way back from Poole over the weekend

Totally my fault for not securing them properly in the first place. Not too fussed about the TV dome (Glomex digital) as we still pick up a fantastic picture with just the cable and booster turned on which does beg the question what the heck does the dome do for a living? It's more the dual horns as they're rocking horse poop to get hold of, these are they but the dual version:

The chart plotter lost its fix on the way in too but found that was down to the seatalk connector falling out the back of the C70 plotter.

So, is it just me or have you guys lost bits off the boat that shouldn't really come off so easily?

Touch wood, I've not had this problem YET!!

The only things we appear to loose underway is fuel out of the tank and alcohol from the fun box!! :)

Does dropping the wife's car keys over the side count??

Does the dog count ?

Just left the mooring on Saturday headed for the Hamble bridges when I realised I had left one of the whip aerials up. Not a problem - no. 1 daughter (the stroppy nearly teenager) took over helm whilst I went to sort it. No problem I thought until I turned on the narrow side deck back towards the aft deck to literally bump into the hound who at the most inappropriate moment decided to follow me up the side deck. He then slipped sideways and by the time I roughly grabbed his scruff his back legs and a good deal of the rest of him was river bound.

Fortunately I just managed to haul him unceremoniously back aboard, where he was rudely consigned to the cabin, where he will be tied for all future harbour manoeuvres.

Had he gone I am not sure what I would have done. The flood tide was running at 2 knots and with the proximity of numerous obstructions, he would have been quite on his own and in very cold water. So a simple planning omission nearly led to a family disaster.

Anyone want a labradoodle ?

It was Phantoms you worked on wasn't it? :p :) :) :) (we'll conveniently not mention the number of shackles and shackle pins I've dropped over the side...)

coming out of dover a couple of months ago in a force 9 {idiot} we lost our flag staff, and a bronze air vent when a wave hit
us as we were heeling right over! couldent get back in quick enough, never again will i let a mamber of crew get a weather forecast!

Never lost any bits of my boat as far as I remember. Glooped the odd nut and bolt (but never vital ones, always replaceable from the bits box) and pair of pliers (annoying as they were non-rusting chrome ones). Most annoying was actually a ball of tarred marline (that's sailory string for you mobo types :) ) when I had some seizings on my topping lifts to do and leatherwork lacing on the gammon iron.

Working on the bow nav light yesterday, which hangs out over the water, so I stretched a big gardening bag below it to catch anything that fell out :)

I blame it on the Skipper as Carly was listening to the radio @ the time when he was hitting those massive waves as per the video
Well the good news is at least the Halfords Windscreen Wiper Blades and Steve's Sweets are also hopefully still intact - I'll get my coat

as luck would have it, gary, as yet i,ve not lost anything except a pair of specs at mercury..just for reference, "sweeties overboard" is a FULLY JUSTIFYED HELICOPTER MAYDAY SITUATION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our count of things that have gone overboard include

A very expensive Rupes Polisher on it's maiden voyage to the boat
A brand new pair of varifocals ( why, oh why does he still insist on pushing them onto his head)
Various tools
An 8 year old in Dives Sur Mer Harbour

We got the polisher and the 8 year old back - both in full working order:rolleyes:

May
Xx

Ooops - forgot about the rope in Fecamp but our prop rescued that for us as we reversed onto mooring:o
And - if I could have a pound for every cap that has blown off his head
Then there was the dinghy cover.............

+1 for the cap. I had a floppy hat that I'd fitted with 50+ badges over 20 years or more. Ideal for eye shade on the water. A gust snatched it off in one of the races off Anglesea. By the time I could backpaddle to stop and return to the site it had sunk like a stone.

Gps antenna, triple horns and navtex antenna. I had just fitted a new custom built radar arch (welded up in the boatyard out of scrap 316 25mm tube, doubled up and made whilst sitting around consuming beer as the sun set). It looks really elegant and suits the boat. No problems until I decided to do a fast run from Epidavros to Aegina in a 5-6 before we got socked in. Boat ran really well but I noticed first the plotter went, then the navtex. When I got the boat back to home port I went up on top to check it out. It seems the elegant design of the arch has a natural frequency close to the Detroits at full bore, so the whole thing vibrated and loosened all the fixing bolts. If I'd gone on any longer the radome would have been next. Next trip everything bolted with locknuts

Not exactly fallen off but.......

Couple of days ago I was on my own, drift angling over a wreck. It was a bit lumpy and getting cold/bored, I went in the cabin to play with the fish finder. Heard an almighty crash which I assumed was the transom door slamming.

Had a look a couple of minutes later and, nope, it was my favourite boat rod and Mitchell 624 reel gone forever.

Must have got snagged on the wreck and pulled over the side :(
