hello again,
i found this attractive engine on a duck but it is in india. the owner is a ship breakers yard. they say packing and shipping to london, uk will cost 300usd.
has anyone done any business with this company called MicroMarine?
how is the transaction normally done? half money before shipping and the rest when engine received?

Their website says 25% up front, then the rest after inspection of product if you arrange inspection at their warehouse. The other 75% paid before shipment! It looks as if you have to register with the website before seeing any product details.

it is a Bukh DV36.. i believe it is the most attractive diesel for a boat
i found micromarine through apollo duck, they sent me the videos of the engine running and i bargained it to suitable price.
they want full payment before sending though and i still don;t know what guarantees i can ask for.
any ideas?

You really are on your own if you buy in this way. The engine will almost certainly be out of a ships lifeboat, so you need to be clear that the spec is appropriate for your use as you will have no effective comeback once you have paid. Although it maybe cheap for you to buy from India, it is not a "cheap" engine to own and operate, There are many other choices that are arguably better, depending on your specific requirements.

Be careful with lifeboat engines, as they are specialist, and serve a specific purpose, you might struggle to get parts? i would try and keep local.

I would be extremely wary of parting with cash up front for this from all that distance-they may be perfectly reputable but then again they may not be. Quite a gamble?

This company?

Their website wouldn't fill me with confidence when asked to part with credit card details.

Doesn't look to bad to me (but it's not my money). If you pay on a UK credit card you have recourse against the credit card provider if the goods don't arrive or are otherwise not in accordance with your order/contract.

Sail your Boat there
run it up the beach
and they will pass it up to you...
Just watch out for 200 ton bits of ships dropping down around you
Just kidding mate... :)

Lifeboat engine is only a plus I understand because it is designed to run forever in worst conditions. And lifeboats don't get used that much, I doubt that this engine might have clocked more than 100 hours in 20 years.

Parts are dear, but not dearer than modern marine engines.
Easy to work on it DIY

The engine will be modified to meet SOLAS specification, specificly for lifeboat operation. 100hrs in 20yrs is worse than 1000hrs in 1year! Years matter most, engines can suffer over long periods of doing nothing.
