Anyone been to Ventnor on the IOW?

Is it like Alderney where you have to pick up a buoy and dingy ashore or have they got a pontoon now?

More importantly does it dry out, therefore is it a lunchtime visit on the right tides kind of venue?

Wouldn't take anything bigger than a rib into the harbour.

We picked up a buoy just off the harbour and took the dinghy in, which then dried out. There is a water taxi too I believe (though its a couple of years since we stopped there).

Best go in settled weather with no east in it.We have a home in Bonchurch, and often tie our boat (43ft) to the bouys outside, leaving it there overnight, so long as its not going to blow more than a 4.Harbourmaster Damian top man will pick you up and run u ashore in his rib.
Take a trip to the Bonchurch inn, best hidden secret on the island.

We went last year, wont go again because of the extorsionate amount they charge for mooring. I think it was £12 for a lunch time stop. The 'harbour' is a waste of time. I wonder who the planner was, anything more than a couple of small boats and it's full. The town itself is nice.

I think the issue is that there is no 'short stay' price - so the £12 was the overnight price. I agree, thats a bit of a rip off, but I've just paid more for a short-stay at Gunwharf....

Crikey! That is a dry place!

So am I right in saying that even if you pick up a buoy on the outside of the harbour, the harbour master can not get you to or from the shore unless there is water in the harbour? So you run the risk of being left on land while your boat is happily bobbing about on the buoy?

I guess you could take your own dinghy and drag it to some water though.

... in my experience, the main danger at Gunwharf is allowing your ever-loving wife ashore and into the shops. An extortionate mooring fee suddenly becomes the least of one's worries.

On the plus side - so far as I know - they don't sell donkeys :)
