Anybody watch Timothy West and Sybil....

Canal du Midi......How we should have done it and years before we dug our weedy little drainage ditch versions.
Same with our railways....we picked the narrowest gauge (cheapest) ......
Suspect the French do stuff in the public sector and best for the job,we just go for cheap and suffer the long term conseqences ?

H,mm not so sure about that especially in those days..1800s and all that.

As for us being crowded a quick look at the wikipedia population density table show that we are far from the top of the table.Tiny percentage the UK is built on and anybody who flys in the UK will probably dispute the old story that the UK is covered in concrete.
However nobody ever seems to bother questioning stuff :)

....fairy snuff.. but I live on the south coast and there isn't room to swing a cat down here....

I thought you could not navigate on the London/English canals after dusk, they certainly did not have navigation lights. Tim said it was difficult to steer at night so what was his excuse in the day light?

And TWICE he meandered too long in the daytime and carried on navigating after dark to reach his target.

We did that once in a hired narrowboat. We were held up for half a day due to a blockage at a lock and needed to make up time to get the hire boat back on time so carried on well after dark with just the tunnel light.
