Anybody read the report on the MCA?

Re: The RNLI is NOT an "Agency"

Sarcasm often divides in these forums. Sad.

What is the rate of increase of casualties (is it casualties or deaths?) A few percent? What is the increase in boat ownership over the last twenty years?

Work it out for yourself Andrew.

This is just another report with a prescribed motive - to show how our government "cares" at the expense of yet another group unable to defend itself. This is the thin edge of compulsory licences and regulation. Just what they were looking for. Await an announcement within 6 months.

Re: WHY?

If I were a cynical person, I might be thinking along the lines of..........

"Minister, I really do think weve caned the motorist enough for now"
"Well Humphrey, how do you suggest we raise more indirect taxes?"
"Minister, ther are an awful lot of boat owners, I am told they are all rich.
there are countless ways we can obtain revenue from them"
"Thank you Humphrey, shall we look into it?
"I have already had a dossier prepared for you sir"
"You are a treasure Humphrey"
"Thank you Minister"

Trouble is I think it is happening

Re: The RNLI is NOT an \"Agency\"

Sarcasm? You've only yourself to blame, Steve, there was no point in attacking me for praising the RNLI.

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick with these statistics. A 28% rise in deaths over 5 years in the area of the MCA's remit is NOT trivial. It is extremely likely that it much exceeds increased participation rates in all relevant activities, of which yachting is just a small part: as Mike Martin points out, it even includes cliff suicide.

There is no hint in this report that the government's guns will be turned on yachting. And it was exactly 6 months ago that forum members were predicting exactly the same sort of precipitate government reaction in relation to a Trinity House report about light dues.

Steve

the report specifically mentions that the increase has been in areas OUTSIDE waterborne leisure pursuits ie amongst walkers/climbers/swimmers

Whilst HMG is pretty adept at making up the "proof" to support its actions, that is one it cannot use.

I think the point Steve was making

was that HMG would be very glad to reduce funding to MCA if they could have its work done by the charity RNLI. That would take the costs out of the Public Expenditure and allow our Scots friend to make another claim about his hibernian prudence and fiscal responsibility.

Re: MCA Completely in tune with modern government

Spending up. Results down, The Boss can't grasp the brief.

It's easy to poke fun but it serious. The MCA are currently engaged in lots of lovely new legislation about safety and security issues and it appears they have trouble carrying out their traditional duties with any sort of quality.

Whats even more serious is that among maritime nations they are seen as one of the better organizations.

Excellent news...

But I still think that they'll use it as I suggested. The press immediately jumped upon boaters I understand.

Nuff said.

That\'s probably.....

...because it's true, but then I only know about Greece & France.

Light dues?

The cost of getting yourself licenced and the annual renewal will be your contribution to Light Dues. If (when) we get regulated, that is how you'll pay your light dues.

Now I DO like the idea of charging all foreign registered boats a fee for cruising in our waters and trippling the harbour dues for them. Very sound way of generating revenue.

Re: Losing touch?

And Nth Yorks too

Infuriates me when I see police helicoper (funded from my 76% rise in council tax) doing little more useful than catching car thieves.

But then - many things infuriate me nowadays

OR....

decare Scotland a full member of the EU and then, like certain other EU member countries we could charge them for a Cruising Permit and triple their visitor mooring charges and harbour dues.

Steve Cronin

wherever you look with this government, there's a Scot telling you how to run your life, or as in recent weeks (the very reasonable sounding) Dr John Ried spinning like mad on the box to get Bambi out of yet another scrape.

\"Theoretically\" Humphrey...

...Yes Minister, Theoretically.
