Anybody near a 2007 Fairline Targa 40?

Hi Jimmy,
This is a bit weird and sorry I only found your thread this evening.

I have a spare pair of T40 back stays. They are longer and straight with eyes at each end similar to those shown earlier #4693100 but instead of external fit they are male inserted. They were on my Targa when I cleared out various items and I'm sure I took these for later use leaving the originals in use..

I've just had a quick look in my garage at home and can't find them so I'm guessing there's a 60% chance they'll be in the garage on Houston.

If you can wait 'til next weekend I would expect to find them. :ambivalence:

Roger.

Hi Roger

This is very interesting - what you're describing sounds like the very thing I am looking for. From your recollection, do you think each end has one of these:
http://www.makefast.com/acatalog/INTERNAL_ADJUSTABLE_END_PLUGS.html

As I understand it, the idea was that one end was a LH thread, the other end a RH thread, and then you just rotate the tube to adjust the tension on the canopy hoop that the arms are supporting.

Did you ever use them on the boat? If so - can you recall how they attached at the canopy end?

Ooh ... looking forward to hearing if they are on Houston!

Cheers
Jimmy

Hi,
They were very similar to those on your link but 'preset' they have fixed eyes into nylon inserts, but they will be slightly longer than yours so can be trimmed to length..

The LH and RH thread would be far superior for making them fit exactly to your existing covers. In my case, I had them supplied by a very inferior cover maker from Weymouth. His new covers were baggy and he said I needed extended poles! This was rubbish, JB sorted them and I used the original poles. If I can find them and I do hope to, you can have them. I would recommend getting the 'Cast jaw slide' from your link to atach it to the canopy end. I might have those too.

The one thing about the bolt on slide is that it's a pain to remove as you will need a screw driver or Alun key at least. The old ball and socket is much easier to remove, but of course you have to take care when doing so. Maybe while your in the med, these struts are far less important anyway. I often used to leave them off and so did Simon with 'Tyco'. They're really only needed during winter or when plenty snow due.

Still, I will check again for you at the weekend, possibly Friday.

Well I find it very disappointing you have given up on your lost piece.

I have found the solution for you.

Think of the satisfaction you will feel finding your long lost pole. Surely worth the money just for that :D:D:D

Joking aside, could have a nice little sideline in recovery with that bit of kit.

Nice idea, although to put it in perspective, for the buy-it-now price I could have the boat shipped back to the UK, new canopy arms fabricated and fitted there, and then get it all shipped back to France .... and still have change!

Have you tried Kayospruce in Fareham? I've found them helpful in the past for odd bits of stainless fixings and I would guess they would fabricate a ball and socket joint to suit.

No connection blah, blah, blah.

Hi Jimmy,

There is a very late model Targa 38 berthed a couple of boats from me. If that is a relevant model and your dilemma still remains unsolved I can go down and ask to take a photo?

That's a very helpful tip, thanks - they appear to stock the adjuster fittings that I'm after. As you suggest, the ball/socket piece looks like it is the problem.

Evening K

Thanks for this - but in fact I think we are quite close to a solution. It appears that Fairline might actually have a pair of these canopy arms in stock as leftovers from production; I'll know for sure at the beginning of next week. If that doesn't work out, then Flexicovers have designed a replacement arm, and I can get a set from them. And failing all that, Kayospruce as mentioned by BJB above have a bunch of fittings, and my local fabricator can make something, if I can figure out the top fitting.

Hopefully one of these will work out, which is good because I want to go down to the boat next weekend and I'd prefer to be taking these parts with me. It's amazing how much time a simple(ish) missing part can consume...

Thanks again for the offer - not needed for now, I don't think.

Ok, hope you get it sorted with minimum further hassle. It's amazing how seemingly minor glitches can sometimes be a real pain to sort out...

Right, I think I've got this sorted. It eventually transpired that Fairline had two leftover canopy frame assemblies from the original Targa 40 production run; these are late-production assemblies, so were made by Flexicovers, as opposed to the earlier assembly which was made by Cooney Marine, and which is fitted to my boat.

So today I was up at the factory in Oundle, and with the excellent assistance of Steve Kibble, who is a service and parts guru up there, I now have an entire replacement canopy frame. Obviously this is a bit tricky to get into my hand baggage, so for now I'm just going to take the rear arms down to the boat, but at some point I'll probably swap the whole frame over (the newer design has some nice adjustment features which the old one doesn't have).

Thanks for all the help from everyone with this one. It's been a bit of a mission but hopefully this time next week the new arms will be on the boat.
