Re: Ashamed to say, that I am ashamed to have missed it

Even though it is not a frequent happening (on a boat population basis), I agree with you absolutely because when it does the bang is big. I do turn it off myself and it was a sad omission on my part not to have mentioned it. Thanks.

Hot bits of engine.

The MCA are currently (after a fire in an Irish Sea ferry - no-one hurt but scary) very keen indeed on all fuel lines being encased, full length.

This is a big ship IMO requirement (which, it is fair to say, many shipowners have been slow to act on) but the average small yacht diesel auxiliary has the delivery pipe from the injector pump, not encased, passing within a couple of inches of a hot exhaust bend.

The commonest cause of ship fires does indeed seem to be "diesel sprayed onto hot exhaust!"

Re: Hot bits of engine.

That's the one thing that sticks in my mind from a fire safety course: Petrol vapours + air are explosive, but petrol sprayed onto a hot exhaust manifold will just evaporate relatively harmlessly. Diesel has a lower flash point and will ignite.

Re: \"servicing\" extinguishers

yeah, but they don't try them out - they weigh them and sign the little tickety bit making one feel very good about maintaining things safely...but those of mine that didn't work as above were "serviced" an hour earlier...

Re: Hot bits of engine.

But petrol sprayed onto hot exhaust evaporates and makes petrol vapours - as you say petrol vapours and air are explosive. I would not place much merit on the advice.
