They've just given us a significantly lower quote than Navigators and General for our new aquisition (assuming all goes well over the next couple of weeks).

Just wondered if anybody had any experience with them, particularly if you had to make a claim.

Cheers

I moved from N&G to GJW for the same reason Karen - lower quote for same (in fact better) cover AND a further big plus being that their single handed cover is far more generous. Never claimed though.

Yes, with them for three or four years, until recently. Always very efficient. We had one claim involving new boom, new headsail and some standing rigging. All dealt with quickly and with no fuss.
Highly recommended.

funnily enough, I got a quote from them and Pantenius & was surprised that not only was Pantenius cheeper, they also covered more....so might be worth considering.

Hi Karen

Sirenia was covered by GJW when she had her little "damp problem"
They where very fair and agreed a settlement reasonably quickly as the amount I suggested.

The only difficulty was that at renewal last year they wanted £120 more that the best equivalent quote and would not move on it saying that then needed to start recouping the money that had paid out.
The other insurers were fully aware of the claim.
Needless to say She is not insured with them at the moment.
She is with Yachtline (Pantenius's on-line department)

The Essex effect ?

I was insured with GJW (from when it was Groves, John & Westrup...) both in North Wales and more recently in Suffolk.
When Levington became more than I could afford, I moved to Maldon and was surprised to find that GJW declined to insure; never made a claim in 25 years, no reasons given.
Navigators, via Nautical Insurance Services, had no reservations about providing the same insurance, including single-handing and at night for an increased excess.

I have been with GJW since the mob in Leigh On Sea refused to pay out, some 18 years ago.

The "Leigh on sea mob " I believe are/ were agents who used GJW underwriters. When I made a claim a few years ago the agents suggested I dealt directly with GJW who were very helpful and prompt with settlement. I've now been with them for about 10 years. I recomend them.

Incidentally, I had insured my old wooden, petrol engined boats with Navigators for 20 odd years, yet when I tried to insure my Ufo with them, they declined. The only explanation I could get was :~
"computer says no"

They were quite happy to insure me on a swinging mooring in Lawling Creek and potentially at Marconi Sailing Club, maybe it was just Maldon?

maybe it was just Maldon?

Quite possibly ; my Maldon berth is in a yard with no security, apart from my liveaboard neighbour. Just walk along the staging and onto the boat.
You could argue that as swinging mooring, such as Lawling and Marconi, has no security either, but at least it deters the casual walk-on thief.
Having said that, I believe I've been 'visited' from the water at least once, as suggested by muddy hand and footprints on the transom and pushpit. Nothing disturbed though.

When you say ‘the mob in Leigh On Sea’ I cannot believe you mean Nautical Insurance Services. I have been with them for years – I have always found them to be excellent. Their prices are very competitive and they were brilliant when the yard damaged my boat last year. The yard were insured by GJW and they were no problem either.

KC Powell. I still bear the mental scars.

I am with GJW and they paid out over my last boat's little keep problem. Very happy with them.

GJW have just come through with the goods for us on Brigantia

They'll insure us fully comp on a swinging mooring and for remaining in commission year round and even though she's 41 years old they'll accept a brief tick form self-assessment on the condition of the boat rather than demand a professional survey.

There was me thinking we'd have to settle for 3rd party insurance (the cost of a full survey and valuation would be prohibitive at the moment)

They're not even charging us extra for the year round in commission (maybe because the moorings at Fambridge are marina managed and supervised the year round) - she will probably be coming out of the water this coming winter but we can now decide when and for how long, or even if, to suit our plans rather than the terms of our insurance

So I'm very grateful for this thread because I hadn't found GJW by google search

Cheers

GJW

If you do insure with them make sure you get additional quotes when you renew next year.

I have been with them for many seasons. This year our renewal quote was higher than expected.

It is a fact that new business will receive a bigger discount that existing customers, I did proove this to them and they did match the new business quote a saving of over £170!!

GJW (and all insurance companies) why not try and look after your existing client base.

That said very easy to deal with and efficient.

We have been with GJW for some 15 years now, two claims, both were when we were moored and hit by hireboats on the broads. Not only did they settle the repair bills quickly but recovered our uninsured losses for us within a month or so. Not the cheapest quote when we renew each year but the difference is within comfort levels considering the good experience we have had.
