Leaving stainless steel aside for the moment. I am drilling holes in ply that are taking 3 inch studs and a fitting the other side. They need to be straight to in order not to foul the fitting body. Unfortunately, despite trying hard, my results are to say the least spotty ! plus I am running out of ply.

Any tips would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

If the py is loose (sounds like it) you need a proper stand and lever to bring the drill down vertically, can rent or buy one. Either way, dril a pilot hole (smaller dia) first, and if no stand get mate or wife to watch up a bit down a bit etc.

first use a bench drill stand, get a bit of hardwood drill your hole nice and staight, than use as a guide{or.cub} for your work.

I have a lightweight stand made by Black and Decker, which I use on such occaisions. It cost me £11 a few years ago; they're still relatively cheap compared with loads of wasted of marine ply. Be sure to get the correct one - B&D makes drills with two sizes of collar (by which the drill attaches to the stand). I bought the wrong one and ended up buying a second drill as well.
