Any thoughts on Shamrock Quay

As i have had the boat on the market for a while now without much interest (Nothing to do with presentation, condition or price i hope, more that she is more of an unknown oddity) i think i may end up keeping her for another few seasons. I have been in Chichester Marina for 5 years and whilst the place is beautiful and quiet the lock is a real PITA and seems to be getting slower. Having spent a bit of time on the phone ringing around it seems that shamrock quay in southampton are pretty close price wise, i know its more industrial etc, however i like to sail not stay tied up in the marina. Anyway, anyone got any advicem verdict, opinion on shamrock quay?

I had a yacht there years and years ago and I liked it.
I recently went back to pick someone up and it still looked ok.

Hamble Point might be worth a look too.
 
Never stayed there, but have taken boats to and from SQ and Ocean Village. With a sailing boat, it does take a long time to get up and down Soton Water, and somehow SW itself never seems like 'proper' sailing. But I guess from Chi Marina to the Bar Beacon ain't exactly quick, eiter.
 
We moored there in the days when Mr Diesel would pull up alongside
your boat on a weekday, when you were not there and fill her up for 18p a litre:eek:

We used to get a stunning breakfast in the Yellow Welly and a good, if a trifle expensive, dinner in Taps Restaurant

It was the only Marina that we have ever had our car broken into and the radio stolen:( but that did not put us off too much). The chandlery was very good.

Access was excellent, shower/loo facilities were good and the staff were brilliant.

Even after we left we would go back for lifting and hard standing through the winter

I would certainly go back again

The only downside was the immediate outside area and the proximity to the Footy Stadium on match day

We have just left Chichester after 4 good years and moved to Eastbourne - more of a "storage" move whilst we decide what we are going to do next. That is the cheapest marina on the South Coast that we could find:)

I'm at Kemp's, just across the river from Shamrock. I kind of think of them as the posh side of town :)

The only downside of the location for me is, as Ken says, the time it takes to get down Southampton Water to the Solent proper. The river part is no problem, it's a nice distance to get things tidied away, warps and fenders out or stowed, etc. It's the leg down Southampton Water that seems to have an unfavourable wind far more often than it deserves to :)

I've been at Shamrock for a few months now, fantastic MDL marina, everyone is really friendly there and Sonjia is super effcient! Facilities are also really good! Not to mention the Chandlery! Massive car park too!

Only negative is the pub is average but I havent been in for a while and it's a bit of a hike ot the town!

Whatever you do, don't forget Freedom Berthing that way if you don't like it you can change marinas free of charge :-)
 
I kept my boat there for about 10 years until I moved to the West Country. During that time they made a lot of improvements including replacing the long pontoons with finger berths which made life much easier when the wind and/or tide made it difficult to slot into your berth.

I always found the staff good and preferred being in a "working" marina rather than a "trendy".

Coming from the Midlands the car journey was much easier than the other Solent marinas. The only drawback was that sometimes the trek down Southampton Water was a bit tedious.

I kept a previous boat in Chichester Marina and would not go back to the hassle of the lock and limited access.

Excellent staff and the freedom berthing a real bonus. So you can spend 30 nights in hamble free, and as many as you like in any other MDL. Plus as many lunch stops as you like free.
So deliver to torquay one weekend, start your westcountry cruise the next for example. For mobos like me a winter on the Thames is lovely and the 12p a litre fuel discount adds up.

I wouldn't have moved but for the price, a cable downriver is ocean quay for half the price (but without the benefits)

Agree Thai is super:D

Not much bothered about facilities as we cannot get there to visit boat till October and intend to move next May to Ipswich for major work on boat and as berthing is half of Solent rates it suits us fine

Kept my boat in SQ between 2002 and 2005. Great marina and helpful staff. The Bar caters for the local football market, and whilst it does get noisy there is not any trouble. On the Pontoons its quiet.

SQ is cheaper than the Hamble, its a fairly long stretch down Southampton water to get to the nicer bits of the Solent but SQ is easier to get to by car. Whilst situated in an industrial part of Southampton, think of SQ as a departure point rather than a destination!

I would call SQ a working marina. There is a choice of trades from gel-coat to metal bashers. Anything can be fixed in SQ.

I moved from SQ in 2005 to a club owned pontoon in Gosport which is much cheaper. If I were to go back to a commercial berth would be close to the top of my list. I would of course consider the Hamble, but that would take the correct numbers to come up on the lottery :-)

I went into Royal Clarence once, we stopped for all of 40minutes, it took us 15minutes to walk to the loos!

It seems to be a bit of a lemon development, built by a developer at the height of the property boom, who thought they could sell the apartments with views of pretty boats. However the marina facilities were not built with a yachtsman in mind! All the vacant properties both commercial and residential made it feel like a ghost town.
