Hi

Excuse the long post...

I've recently bought a 1983 Suzuki DT3.5 outboard for fishing on the broads.

I've sorted it mechanically so that it's reliable and it starts fine.

However.....

I cannot obtain a "proper" manual for it. I bought the Clymer 1977-84 manual which turned out to be pretty worthless.

The engine will start first or second pull and runs well when jogging along, but the idle appears to be really really rich...

The engine will four stroke quite badly until around 1/2 - 1/3 throttle when it will clear up and run really nicely.

It smokes a fair bit at tickover, but is clean as a whistle whilst bumbling along at 1.2 throttle.

The carb, pump and filter have been cleaned out thoroughly several times and float level adjusted to be within spec.

Reeds are clean and in good nick.

I am wondering whether I have a problem with the pilot side of the carburation. Normally I can get my head around 2 stroke carbs, but the mikuni is baffling me somewhat. The idle stop screw needs to be in as hard as it will go to achieve a reliable tickover. The butterfly is open a suprising amount when this is done.

The air screw seems to make next to b*gger all difference apart from if it's screwed right in. Anything from 1-4 turns out doesn't alter much at all.

If anyone out there owns one of these outboards, then i'd REALLY appreciate a few detailed snaps of the mikuni carburettor.

If there is supposed to be a removable jet next to the air screw, then that could be my problem.... See pic.

I've been scouring the broads whilst out fishing in the hope i'd find another DT user to compare notes with, but alas no joy.

I've scoured google images too.

I know its an old motor, but its perfect for my needs, so i'd like to get her running as well as I can.

Can anyone assist? I'd be very grateful

Thanks for reading

Jon
