Any Rocky areas around blackwater river, essex coast?

I'm trying to locate any areas in the water in the blackwater river with rocky patches/areas.
I've got a chart but not sure what the symbol is for rocky bits, and to be honest, I dont think its showing any. Does anyone know any areas off-hand from experience around there, or could you point me to a symbol which would be used in a printed chart of the area?

I'm looking for rocky patches for bass fishing...

Also, what are the symbols I've circled?

umm no chart attached......


suggest you have a look through below link. It is for the America Charts rather than Admiralty charts, but as they are too an intentional standard then they will look similar. Go to section on Nature of Seabed and look for your details there!

Would suggest that you perhaps do an RYA Essential Navigation course? Nothing too heavy and it teaches you the basics

Precious few rocks anywhere on the east coast - just lots of mud, I'm afraid!

Plenty of rock hard shingle banks though,further out.

Can't really see the symbol but I guess it's salt marsh. No rocks anywhere on that chart. It's sand, gravel or mud. Plenty of bass fishing though.

Those symbols represent marsh, swamp or salt marsh ....... plenty around that area I should think.

You should get yourself a copy of "Symbols and Abbreviations used on Admiralty Charts" It is an A4 book but goes under the name of chart 5011.

There is a whole page of symbols that are used for rocks alone depending on the scale of the chart and whether the rocks are covered, cover and uncover or do not cover etc

The River Medway is virtually 99.99 % mud, Bass is just about all the casual angler will catch.
You may be wanting to find any spot that has a faster more disturbed flow, where rivers narrow or turn sharp corners etc.
Best method of all is the Mk1 eyeball,just keep and eye on where the locals congregate especially the smaller charter boats.
They will always have a favorite spot or two close to home. If the weather is rubbish outside,they need to give their customers at least a couple of decent fish for their money on the way back in.

Omega2, these look awesome, just what I want to do. Going with 2 mates this weekend on the boat around bradwell area... and trying to get as much info as possible.
Did you fish those in the estuary, or further out, perhaps near the windmills?
Do you perhaps get bigger bass further out? Were those bottom fished, lure fished or float fished - or perhaps even trolled?

Friend of ours tied up to the Richard Montgomery and reckoned that the fishing was fantastic - till the harbour master turned up in a flap and moved him on!

Just a few mies out from the Bench Head, look for "ripples" and fish the bottom. The river will be overcrowded with sailors this week end, a good place to avoid.

Well, we caught nothing over the weekend. Despite 3 days of fishing, trying ragworm/mackerel/eels.... spinning with dexter wedges/abu toby's/yo-zuris and rapala J13's. Tried bottom fishing a lot.

The water was well muddy, I do question how on earth a bass would see a lure in those waters, about 10cm down from the surface, I could not even see the lure. Kept bringing up weeds too... We tried all around the river, by the jetty at osea island, also st andrews bay, and also bottom fishing past Bench head towards the windmills.

What were we doing wrong?
