Just thought I'd start a separate thread on this subject. We're thinking about keeping our Bavaria 38 in this marina for the next year or so. Mainly in dry storage.
Someone mentioned not to go there unless you want to get ripped off. However on Jimbsail there is a review of a happy customer.
Anybody else on here have a view of this marina? I think the maintenance yard is working under the same name. Perhaps this is where some of the difference in experience comes from?

Thanks a lot.

I feel sure that 1bobt will respond, as I remember his case quite well. I know another owner who had another, similar experience with the yard, even down to the toerail being attached to the boat by Sikaflex, bolts and no nuts. He also took his boat away to have the work completed properly. I assume the marina side of the business might be less capable of ripping you off but be careful!

Thanks Vyv, we are really only looking at the marina at this point. Of course you never know when you might need work done, but if we do, we'll be very careful with Olympic maintenance yard.

I've quite frequently used Olympic Marine yard for urgent repair work - and found them competent but not inexpensive.
Two occasions in the last two years - involving an alternator mounting and a replacement luff line.
The marina is not one for liveaboards - more for those who play with superyachts rather than those looking for a overwintering berth.
Their prices are exorbitant, the mini-market sad and under-stocked and neither washing machine or laundry were operative the last time I was there in September 19th 2015.
I would be concerned about handing major hull rebuilds over to them, especially insurance jobs, where they have had bad press 3-4 years ago.

The staff are very helpful and friendly, but I couldn't recommend it as a matey, comfortable over-wintering site.

I can speak from first hand experience and say its the coldest windiest place I have ever worked over the winter. any weather seems to funnel down right through the yard and it was constant for about 6 weeks the winter I was there.

Lavrio is a miserable town in winter and hell on earth in summer due to the all night disco music. Olympic is spared some of the worst of it but it's not a warm and comforting place and the services and chandler are rapacious. Not recommended

We're certainly not thinking of spending the winter onboard in Olympic Marina. We're just looking for a safe and convenient place to leave our boat while we are away working. The idea would be to launch it a couple of times per year to spend a few weeks cruising. The proximity to ATH is certainly a selling point.
The fact that Lavrio is apparently a dreary place doesn't concern us very much, as we would be away as soon as the boat is launched. I was just looking for information on the marina staff, the safety of the place weatherwise and the security situation.
I posted this in the liveaboard section because this is where the Greece expertise lives.
Thank you so much for your views so far. Very helpful.

My suggestion, after 12 years of doing it, is to store your boat ashore at Kanonis on Aegina. You can launch the day after you arrive and get hauled out the day before you leave. Cheaper, safer and more convenient than keeping the boat afloat. The yard is 21/2 easy hours from ATH.

If you want to keep the boat in the water you have to pay for the whole year upfront.
That only includes 10 days in the hard. You pay extra for more days. Ask for an offer..

I'm not aware of any happy reviews! Here's the site quote:

Olympic Marine SA just south of Lavrion town is a rather isolated and soul-less marina with large yard. It provides a very wide range of expensive yacht repair and maintenance services, and has covered working areas suitable for major GRP repair. It has been reported as offering casual service to smaller vessels, with pricing suited more to mega yachts.

Recommendation:-

Use the N Aegean - prices 30-50% of the S, 3day aweek flights direct to Thessaloniki by BA, OR use Aegean from ATH to one of the feeder airports.
Send an personal e-mail and I'll give you some pointers.
Whatever you do DON'T use Olympic as your permanent base (unless you're made of money and value privacy inordinately).

I fly LHR ATH KVA, BA and Aegean, cost for last flight for my wife was Euro 111.15. Biggest time waster is from home to LHR.
Boat when I'm not on it is safely stored ashore out of the water - cost pa for 10m is Euro 1000 including lifts, pressure wash and a secure compound. Travel time (excluding to & from airports 4:45hrs from London)
Max he can handle is 24m loa x 8m beam x 180 tonnes.

As already pointed any alternative to Olympic is likely to be superior for a long-term base.

Must agree Aegina is only 2 hours away from airport safe, cheap and secure as well as friendly I use Jordon's lift but Takis yard .
If you do consider a place here ask me before contacting Jordon as it may be cheaper.

Last week sailed the boat from Asprakis boatyard on Aegina to Cleopatra in Preveza.
Must say that Asprakis was very nice. I was a bit anxious from what I read here, but they launched the boat nicely on time and all went well.
Cleopatra seems like a very efficient place. I like the way they do the lifting operation. I like the fact that they have water and electricity at your "parking space". The restaurant on site is quite nice and there are always people around.
The office staff seem to be very much on top of things and the technical department provided me with an estimate for some work within 5 days.
So, very happy with my decision for Cleopatra so far. Now, if only Preveza would get more flights.....
