I'm interested in the custom design and build of a modern, lightweight, yacht for cruising. Ultimately, the design and building will be undertaken mainly by a boat builder - I won't enough time. I'm new to this forum and I'm trying to find other boat forums for getting good advice and information from many different people on things like:

Design concept,
Project budgeting,
Materials,
Construction methods,
Finding a designer,
Where to have it built,
Good deals on rigging and electronics,
Etc etc

In addition to this forum, are there any other boating forums in the UK (or even North America) that could be useful in getting some help on the above areas?

Cheers

Jim

No.

No other forums exist. Any other forums you may think you have seen were figments of your imagination.

This a really good boat design forum and will lead you into other sites on the subject

http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/

The contributions are completely international and cover a very wide range of subjects .One notable absence is the thread- killing stuff that Flaming has just inflicted on you!!!!
I see this is your first post. So welcome to the YBW Forum and be prepared to suffer the idiot element occassioally. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

PS get into DELFTship on
http://www.delftship.net/
and you will find that you can generate professional models very easily.....and its FREE!!!

After-thought on good boat design books:

A really goood book to get you started is:
"Yacht Design Explained" by Steve Killing
ISBN 0-393-04646-X

or at a simpler level,
"How to Design a Boat" by John Teale
ISBN 0-7136-6208-5

or the bible:
"Principles of Yacht Design" by Larsson and Eliasson
ISBN 13:978-0-7136-7855-0

You can usually get good secondhand copies on Amazon
Good luck

Thanks to those whom posted re the boatdesign.net forums and also books. Is there a register of boat designers in the UK with details of their experience and specialisation?
