Is there any way to get BBC Radio 4 purged of this curse? The inane comments of the commentators trying to fill in time. For those of us living overseas you get nothing but bloody cricket from morning to night. It must be the sport in which the English representation does the worst and it seems to me to be a wholly unfair concentration on one sport - and for that, one country within the UK.
I am eg very interested in swimming and during the BBC commentary on the recent world championships they were giving the results " a new world record was broken" and they weren't even bothered to give the times.

PS I did play when I was young (captain of the North Down youth team) and I still found it boring even then. As an American friend said "I would rather watch paint drying.."
A few weeks ago I had a fantastic trip back accross the channel from Britanny....gentle breeze, glorious sunshine, fishing off the back of the boat..and the test match commentary. Bliss.
I'm not sure that the competitive sailing folk are much better. When did we last win a major international long distance yacht race? Let's see how we do in the Fastnet before we criticise other sports for poor performances.

Doesn't winning a bunch of Gold at the Olympics count? Think there were three golds and even more silver and some bronze just to add to the tally i.e. more metal from sailing that any other Olympic discipline.
Why am I telling you this? I am South African.

Thats apart from a huge number of Olympic and World Champions in various classes. Given the number of (competitive) sailors and the minimal level of funding compared to other sports the results are quite extraordinary.
