What's to say apart from "it was wrong". A couple of weekends ago we sat up the Hamble on a lovely clear night being told it wolud be cloudy with showers all night.

I contacted the Met. Office and got the following inconclusive reply :

"Thank you for your email regarding accuracy and value of Marine forecasts. Sorry it has taken a while to respond, I can say that for accuracy we are 85% accurate for a twenty four hour forecast, though this slips towards 35% at five days. This is because of errors in the initial conditions being compounded. It is possible to get an area forecast for up to 48 hours and 72 hours for a national forecast free of charge. After that you can get a five day planner from our MetWEB service for two tickets (£1) or a location or route specific forecast from a forecaster out to five days for £17. More individual services are available but are generally commercial in nature and therefore quite highly priced.

If you have any further questions or need additional information, please contact the Customer Centre on 0870 9000 100 where one of our advisors will be happy to help you. The number is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Kind regards,
Nick Hutchins
