Any news from Preston?

I could not agree more. Some of the comments and continual sniping by the usual suspects has been absolutely pathetic and is a sad reflection on what gives some people their kicks. It has been dressed up as "satire" but in my opinion (which I fully expect will be ridiculed by those involved) is that it rapidly descended into just being unkind; plain and simple.

I for one am glad that all concerned are safe and hope that no serious damage has been done, Good for you Ellie for getting this far and I wish you all the best for the rest of the journey.

If it wasn't for work commitments I would have loved to have helped out.

To be honest I am not surprised that she hasn't come back on here with updates, "some" would only keep on taking the P**S out of her for asking for sponsorship but why should she not have, I would not say no if I could get something for nothing (or just a few links and mentions on a blog & website) and if they really thought about it they would not either.

I read the threads on Elizmor and was really sickened that members decided to have a go at a 23 year old girl for trying to do something that I'm sure that they would if they could.
Yes she may have jumped in both feet first without looking into finances and things but who hasn't don't that even with small things

Yes I did read it and decided not to say anything but can be silent no longer as the abuse has continued even today, I fully expect to be flamed or told I know nothing, shouldn't have an opinion as I have not posted much on here or have the morals of a rat by the piss takers.

Go for it because I will know that they are trying to justify what they have done and if placed in the same sort of situation would also look for some way of sorting it out.

Everyone IS entitled to have an opinion, this post is mine BUT why be so NASTY about it.

The problem, I think, is that she was perceived as not being wholly straightforward about the "sponsorship", which was really just advertising paid for in kind. Which means that it was we readers who were being sold, not a great and dramatic adventure. Which is fine - we all know that Dylan Winter earns money from KTL - but it could have been put across a bit more straightforwardly. There was also the business of the criticism of Preston Marina followed by silence when they put their very reasonable case. That didn't look too clever.

A 23 year old is a young woman, not a girl. You should probably decide whether she's a delicate flower in need of protection, in which case should probably shouldn't be taking on Elizmor, or a tough young woman who can look after herself and take a bit of criticism. I vote "tough young woman".

All that said, I am sure she would be made very welcome if she reappeared here.

Those who live by social media die by social media. Heat, kitchen, etc.

Well Done,

"....die by social media"......ha ha! Do you think you are perhaps being slightly melodramatic?

You have been one of the most active in this unedifying episode. I just think it is all slightly sad and pathetic that this is what occupies you.

It did get out of control for no real reason. I reported 'abuse' at one stage (I have said before) when it descended to sexual insults. Nothing was done as far as I am aware.

The boat has sailed. It has had a problem. As any of our boats could do and have done. There is no shame in asking for help. The situation is stable and JE looks likely to achieve her ambition. So all good.

I think if people reread the dialogue over Preston Marina in a cool manner, there is little to discuss.

As for freebies, why the heck not. This will prob turn into a PBO article - even more likely know as lessons to be learnt. And I for one, would like to understand those lessons for my own education so I would look forward to reading.

Well, maybe. But you know what I mean, I hope. If you are inviting people to join you on a great adventure, it's probably best to take them along through all of it, even when things get tough. Particularly when things get tough. If you have read the original threads, you'll have noticed that until Eleanor vanished she was getting nothing but support and offers of help. Sure, the attempt to raise money to pay for the launch went down like a lead balloon, but there is no sign that she had anything to do with that. Perhaps a "No, really, I don't need your money" would have been a good idea.

I am heartbroken. Would you address me like that if I was a 23 year old "girl"?

I think - sitting as judge and jury - JD has been one of the more sane ones on this story. Yes, an opinion, but one well stated without having to fall back to vitriol and abuse. Any opinion is valid surely.

Yes.

When she started the post it was another build/restoration post as MANY others member have done, it didn't start with I HAVE BOUGHT THIS BOAT THAT I REALLY CANNOT AFFORD SO WILL YOU ALL GIVE ME MONEY and yes maybe when things started to go wrong she may have asked for help but isn't that what forums are for, asking others for help? As others said I am sure that the companies involved looked into it before deciding to donate equipment and were confident of the return through advertising.

As far as Preston Marina goes how any members post about X marina over charging or Y insurance being expensive and Z mechanic doing a bad job, again isn't that what a forum is for, her opinion and also seeking advice on a way around the seemingly unrealistic re-launch costs (I know that she should have asked BEFORE she made the purchase) but we all make mistakes.

Girl maybe wrong the word but "I" do not need to decide if "she is a delicate flower in need of protection" BUT I DO know she is a human being WITH FEELINGS who does not deserve to be subjected to bullying no one does!

Actually the very first part of the project was a classic teaser campaign - the request for advice on what anchor to use for a 30 tonne boat. That went a bit sour, too, as it became clear that she didn't actually want advice (I had had suggested Woods of Crediton as a supplier) but a free anchor. Getting one in return for some advertising was absolutely fine but, as I wrote, I think it would have gone down better if she had presented it that way rather than as sponsorship. We'd all like a bit of sponsorship; we aren't all in a position to sell advertising.

It's actually very unwise to post derogatory comments about X, Y or Z online, because derogatory is a short step away from defamatory. When Preston Marina stated their position, calmly and in detail, it would have been sensible for her to make some response - not least to acknowledge the considerable support (sponsorship) in kind which they gave her. Walking away was not a sensible decision, and that's when the mood changed a bit.

I really haven't seen much at all by way of bullying and, as I wrote, I am sure that (a) we're all glad that the trip south is under way (b) that we're all glad this hitch seems to have been well and quickly dealt with and (c) that she would be welcome back as an active forum member any time.

Ah, the 'bullying" trump card?

The girl was trying to manipulate the web for her own ends. The "sign my boat bottom" wheeze was a classic. Many saw through it and responded accordingly. It wasn't bullying. It was how people react when they realise they are being taken for mugs.

Sign my bottom would have raised her thousands.

Actually I am a bit pissed off. We have had two lurkers come on here tonight to admonish us all for being unfair.
Why did you not partake in the robust threads at the time?

You see, without engaged members posting regularly this forum would die, like so many other ghost forums in the Web-World.

So, instead of standing back and tut-tutting, why not engage at the sharp end and make your point, instead of leaping in later and telling us all how disappointed you are?

Mr Buckley did, at least, make his point during the threads. Not that I agree with him, but there you are, Can't always agree with people.

small change of emphasis if I may be so bold- I lose money on KTL

I try to defray some of my costs with minor bits of hackery and people send me stuff occasionally... which is very nice of them.

Cakes and old books are most particularly welcome

I might be able to send some old cakes if you want.

I think you will find I did.

I stand corrected, and will look out some old cakes to send you.
