Any news from Preston?

onesea,

Genuine question - where are the decent sheltered moorings with soft mud rather than granite - like sand near to you
?

I drive an hour and a quarter to get to my boat and knowing the South and South West coasts well I have never found anything to match them; I agree about the harbours being way overpriced for visitors ( including me ), I suspect they are driving away the Golden Goose - I like many others will be going straight past Salcombe !

Salcombe haven't increased their mooring in the last 7years unlike Fowey who are now behaving like the old Salcombe . Avoid Fowey unless you have won the lottery .

clyst,

thanks, I'd heard that but tried not to believe it; Fowey is/was my favourite harbour.

Once when I'd had a fire on another boat in a cold September we were escorted to a handy mooring then a pub with a hot meal by the harbourmaster; that was about 1989, now it seems he'd require my PIN number first !

SeaJet,

There are places, once your away from the coast the area has suitable areas of mud, maybe not as ideal in your mind as your mooring but...

Looking down here I believe I can see a few moorings that are well protected but cannot be certain about the bottom type.

As for places to match the South Coast:
North Wales, IOM, West Coast of Scotland, E coast of UK all have various charms. The South coast is not the only place, I am certainly not wanting to be one of the ones who sails to Newtown / Studland and says there is no where better in the world.

There are lots of places I would like to sail that are equally as charming. They might have there challenges as well (so does the south coast) but that to me is part of the reason I go sailing.

I've just realised that this thread has had over 5,000 views and clearly mentions Preston in the title. Is it worth ringing the town council and suggesting a little sponsorship? What could Preston offer me that will cost them very little but be of great value to me? Shame E*****r isn't in Melton Mowbray, that would be a result.

The reason I took the photo in Preston was that I was visiting Ribble Cruising Club. They own their own yard, alongside which are 80 mud berths, just about as sheltered as it is possible to be. I understand the berthing rates are very reasonable. It took us about half an hour to drive to Fleetwood from there.

I'm shocked no one has seen her, after all she lives on a boat in Brighton marina and her boyfriend is a trainee manager of said marina*?

*IIRC:ambivalence:

I am sure lots of people have seen her.

Seem to remember BF not on scene anymore. No idea where I read that. Also don't recall the 'trainee manager' bit.

She WILL launch - doesn't need us to help - and time probably not of the essence beyond the 'I want it now' passion as exhibited (which I thought was great) but now possibly tempered by realism and a proper plan.

I hear the launch has been sub contracted to a chap called Noah who is awaiting his promised divine intervention.

Please. Don't joke. With you saying that and the Met Office claiming we are going to have drier summers it's looks like we are knackered.

I would have thought that time is very much of the essence since storage charges are on the horizon and money doesn't seem plentiful .

If I was in the owner's position I might lie low until something else had been launched, then pop up, smile brightly and say "You've had a ground survey done now, haven't you?".

Good point raised . I wonder at what size/weight of boat would require a ground survey .

As you well know, if the crane is standing elsewhere that won't be relevant.

There was some suggestion from Preston Marina that a more economical (or perhaps just less expensive) solution might arise, and speculation that that solution would involve the launch of another large boat. Waiting till that was done might save the cost of a site survey, at the expense of a separate trip for the crane.
