Any idea what this is?

It looks as if it rotates and articulates. It was only when the snurble grip-thribley was made in glass fibre that it was able to do that,

Possibly a structural piece for a heavy awning ?

Don't know, but If I had a pair of them I would attach them to the guardrail (with the loose pins holding them on) and spring a length of plastic pipe (about 1" diameter ?) between them to hold the winter cover up .

:)
It was found inside the looker of a Jeanneau 34.2 that we have just bought. Nothing else with it, or in the boat to give me a clue either

Have you tried asking either the previous owner or Jeanneau after sales?

Reminds me of a badly designed end for a spinnaker pole.
Also a little bit like a certain special spanner maybe for holding the prop still or something?
Is it steel or ali?

Do not loose it. It will come in handy, even if you never need it:giggle:
Failing that i would suggest a prop or shaft nut spanner. Look for the bar to go in the socket
Am I right in thinking your Jeanneau has a shaft drive? some older versions did ( I think)If so check the prop bearing as it exits the hull for a nut.

From past experience, a good way to find it's purpose is to throw it away.
It will then become obvious what it was for and that it is indispensable.

Absolutely true ?

Several years ago I found something on the cockpit sole on a visit to the boat during winter hibernation. I couldn’t figure out what it was or from where it had come. I kept it for a couple of years, hoping that its purpose would become clear.

I eventually had a clear out and to the bin it went. Shortly thereafter.....?

Good ideas people, thanks for all the input. None of them jump out at me as being the correct one but I'm not discounting anything. If I ever do figure it out I'll let you all know.
