any help with basic 12v set up please

Why??? What kind of school did you go to that taught 12v electrics? :D

Um, any school. Electricity (batteries, switches, lightbulbs, etc) comes into science lessons at quite an early age. Perhaps not enough to safely rewire a boat (volt-drop and current-carrying capacity of a wire probably don't come in till GCSE Physics at a guess, and some people won't grasp it anyway) but certainly enough to answer the OP's question about how to wire a switch into a circuit.

Errrrmmmm... not at my school it didn't - shame really - would have had to be more fun that cutting up frogs.....!

I'll be entirely honest - I did my schooling up to '77 - never did any of that stuff - found the responses here very useful... just a view from the great uneducated you understand... :)

So your syllabus included biology but not physics? Seems very strange to me, but what do I know, I wasn't born then :D

Mind you, I think my mum's education may have been similar; she went to a convent school which was of the opinion that "girls don't need to know such things".

you've ALL been most helpful. thanks.

will look for a busbar and wire it up later in the week. the little cabin boat of a friend is being slowly restored and now wants a little bit of power as just had fitted a small fourstroke outboard with 6amp alternator
