Help - before I shoot myself...

I've got water in the sump oil. It's spurting up through the valve gear into the rocker cover box. A non-Gardner engineer has had a quick look and reckons it's probably a cylinder liner seal gone - and doesn't reckon it can be got at without the engine coming out.

Can anyone think of any other likely/possible causes that would require less drastic action? Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers!

Can you give us some proper input data.

All Gardners were dry liners motors not wet, your engine numpty knows nothing about proper engines.

Lets take a step back, engine model and some proper detail of failure mode.

At the moment sounds line troubleshooting by one legged man at ass kicking party!

Eight year old thread is nothing in Gardner years! My old fishing vessel with its 67 year old Gardner steams past me occasionally when I'm at sea. Hardly hear the motor and the exhaust is clean! Best thing to ever come out of Britain.

Hi There, I'd gave Walsh Engineering a call
.

Walsh's Engineering (Irlam IIRC) have an abundance of ex-Gardner mechs and a depth of knowledge that in my opinion is unsurpassable. Their prices are utterly reasonable and their service to me in the past has been faultless.
Granted this was several years ago, but well worth getting in touch with.

ok more symptons needed..

I am presuming that she is running?
is she running very rough? or can you feel all 6 pots firing?
is the water emulsified into the oil.. or is it dirty but still water..?
have you lost water in the headder tank?..I presume it is indirect cooling?
does it loose header tank water over night... or only whrn running?
does the water in the rocker box come out under pressure... or is it a sloshing sort

Those old Gardners are almost bullet proof .. they have two heads of three pots which makes a head job easier.. but I can't remember if they have wet or dry liners?

come back with more.. good luck

Gardners have always been dry liner motors. In the last days at Barton Hall quality went all to heck and 6LXDT's were renowned for failing final dyno test, piston grabbed the liner and pulled it down, crank web then kissed the liner which all ended in tears.

Lots of cooing about wonderful motors, in reality their mantle was lost by the 1980's poorly developed engine designs, e.g 6LYT and unruly strike prone labour force.

Eight acres of engineering excellence employing close to 3,000 people......All gone!

My son worked on a superyacht based in Mallorca, owned at the time by a family named Gardiner. The boat had a Gardner engine. When the boat was first bought Mr Gardiner liked the engine so much that he bought the Gardner company. This is a true story!.
