I have four LED lights in halogen holders in my boat which are perfectly satisfactory for ordinary use and use very little power. However, since I will spend the winter tied up in a marina I would like to replace them with brighter halogens. Will the halogens survive the 13.4-13.6 volts my '12 volt' system usually runs at? I don't want to replace them just to knacker the new bulbs in a few days.

I run Halogens all the time both G4 capsule and MR16
Because my boat is 24v they are in series pairs and the voltage is 27v and they survive that quite well.
I normally have a 2 week period every 6 months or so when I have to replace a few but since they are only about 50p each its not a problem

BUT
dont go over 5 watts, if you do you will have burned lamp holders and diffusers, they get too hot!!

No these are proper halogen lamp holders, the type you might have in your house. I just put led halogen replacements in them.

You still cant go up to the full rating on the bulb holder as the extra voltage 'overruns' the bulbs which means they give more light but run hotter - hence the shorter life

I use halogen lamps for reading and ordinart lamps for pleasent lighting and now LEDs for power saveing

My halogens are 20w My tungstens are between 5w& 10w my new LEDs bought from Lidel for 4.99 euros are as bright as the halogens but only 5w! Its not a nice light thought but very bright
