Any demand for yet another \"sub forum\" ?

Frequent questions arise about how to do stuff.

How about the next time you do a job remembering to take a few snaps and posting them on a "Fixed it Myself" forum along with a bit of text !

Recent request on here regarding drip from rear of volvo raw pump, well had to do the job myself yesterday it cost about a fiver took 30 mins and was dead easy, a few photos and a quick explanation of where to bash the old seal with a screwdriver and dig it out with your spcially bent bit of wire would possibly help the next chap when he opens the engine hatch and espies a heartsink line of water sprayed up the engine room wall(it drips onto the fanbelt) and Hey Presto.

Was given a great deal of help about a year ago when we needed to replace the transom shield bearings in my outdrive,a few photos from another forumite did the trick.
So how about it..... Mein forumeister ?

Re: Any demand for yet another \"sub forum\" ?

i think posts such as that are a great idea but putting them on a separate forum makes no sense imho. Salami slicing these forums is the worst thing the forum owners have done, imho. I protested at the time. I mostly only look at this forum, and wouldn't look at a "fixit forum" (which would have smaller traffic) due to lack of time

Re: Any demand for yet another \"sub forum\" ?

I can see where both of You are coming from.
Yes a 'fix it' Forum might be nice.
I have discussed this Topic with hlb.
If You can call a conversation with hlb a 'discussion'!
I bow to Your (both oldgit and jfm) 'membership' as prior to mine.

So, your experience of this Forai is without doubt.

As hlb puts it succintley and I know He won,t mind Me typing this.

In His words.

PBO is like 'Gardeners Question Time'

However.

There are always new people coming along.
Who need to know stuff that older and more experienced people/forumites have come accross.

Yep, Salami slicing is not good, cept on Me Pizzas what I flog!!

I think the balance of Forum categories is alive and well.
There are other Forums that are more specific ref mending/ fixing certian stuff and Brands.

Personally I would like a 'Fix it Forum'
Cos I fix things (sometimes, they say!) but I don,t think the Majority of Forum members would like another Category.

I await flack/ schrapnel /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But doesn't that mean you'd like some fixit posts, rather than a fixit forum? I can see the benifit of fixit posts, but what is the benefit of putting them in another room (a dark cellar, that many folks wont visit)?

Imho, with the size of this forum, I think people should make the thread titles clear so others can see if it's a cruising post or a fixit or whatever. Most do, but titles like "A question" or "I was wondering if..." are unhelpful

Re: Any demand for yet another \"sub forum\" ?

So how about a knowledge-base with categories and keywords searches. Go to to the "Fixit Forum" and you'd see categories perhaps such as Plumbing, Engine, Heating or some such and the ability to search on keywords such as Jabsco, Impeller and the like. Google would be fine as it would only be searching the "Fixit Forum".

Posts could be nominated by anyone to be added to "Fixit" and the moderator would be able to scan through the thread and, if he thought it was okay, simply copy the relevant posts or maybe the whole thread to the Fixit area.

Is that workable or am I being unreasonable to moderators who do have day jobs as well (if sitting in the cockpit of a 42' Flybridge handing out beer counts as a day job /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif).

It could give an easily searched source of info for PBO type articles in the mags as well of course.

Re: Any demand for yet another \"sub forum\" ?

Could you have identifying icons on the side to indicate which category the post applies to, if you think it should be in a specific area.

Re: Any demand for yet another \"sub forum\" ?

On the subject of salami slicing, the one thing about this forum that really annoys me, is the posts vanish into oblivion in just a matter of days, and if busy sometimes a matter of hours, unlike other forums where, if a new reply is posted on a older subject it brings it back to the top of the pile, to give continuity to posts.

but as always, only IMHO /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Any demand for yet another \"sub forum\" ?

Main advantage of seperate forum would be that if you wanted to try and do a job you would only have to wade through other "fixit" threads which will all hopefully be carefully and thoughtfully /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif titled with the nature of the job on the header

ie.How to replace No2 piston on your D3 while underway using only a penknife and some sellotape"

The reason that fixit posts should not be on the general forum is due to coming on line with eager anticipation of a sensible discussion on the finer points of tax raising in Majorca /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifand finding the entire page full of Fuxit threads all consisting of 15 pages of text each containing 12 fuzzy photos of a proud owner going into exquisite detail about how to change the gasket on his fuel lift pump.
This only resurrected because somebody felt the urgent need to add just one more fuzzy photo and update the thread. On a Fixit only forum if you wanted to sort something you would know exactly where to at least start your search................

A very good case for consigning this proposed forum to its own little
"Photofix" gulag perhaps?
Ps My photobucket is bursting at the seams with poorly lit pictures of grubby fingers forcing reluctant oil seals into small holes.

Re: Any demand for yet another \"sub forum\" ?

I have got that problem! Any idea what the thread was called? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

there is a setting for this on here
"display preferences"

Re: Any demand for yet another \"sub forum\" ?

Its a good idea but I agree with jfm, watering down the knowledge base is not good.

A compromise would be to post the details here, who knows others may also add handy tips to your thread too.

The problem is the search engine again, perhaps you could collate a few handy 'fixed it myself' threads and start a post putting a link in your signature.

I tried this with lazy gits search engine which I used a lot but abandoned it as not many others thought it a very bright idea.

There were some 'fix it' type posts in there.

If you go and play with your personal settings on this site you can have the posts presented with the latest postings at the top. Damn clever these IPC software Johnnies.

The best solution would be to have a decent search facility on this site

[/ QUOTE ]Exactly - we have the PBO forum that is intended for fixing things and it works very well I think. A lot of boaty fixit stuff is common across both sail and motor spectrums, it's just amount of wash, knowledge and the interpretaton of colregs that divides us!!

The problem is finding the answers - the present search facility is totally cr*p, most fixit advice has been posted umpteen times but finding it using the present search facility is nigh on impossible.

Cheers, Brian.

Mostly I log into Mobo.
Then dip into the Lounge for a Giggle..
Pootle into Scutt and PBO occasionally.

In scutt and pbo, peeps ask fix it questions.
If I can help I do.

Seems there are fix it questions in 3 Forai.
Some way of indentyfing the fix it questions is where I am coming from.

Well actually there are probably fixing questions in 'Livaboard and 'Thames as well I suppose.
I don,t go into those Forai much.
Cripes!
Spend too much time on ere anyway.

Re: Any demand for yet another \"sub forum\" ?

The most usefull forum is the fuel price one, but hardly anyone posts there, so it's fairly useless.

Other forums, like the Thames and East coast, should be done away with, a splatering of there posts across mobo or scuttlebut used to be of interest to others. But not enough to wade through different forums.

Course the biggest problem with the perfect search facility is, all questions have been answered at least a thousand times before. So no need for a forum at all.

How many here even own a sub? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
