Any body tied this -- or is it more shiat ?

err, not all birds 'see' in the UV light range, so it might be less than effective for e.g. gulls.

I know bird carp is bad, especially when the starlings hit the berries, but is it really any advantage to replace the free bird carp with a sticky yellow gel that you paid £42 for and have to replace every 3 months?

I have not used it myself but have been on a boat that used something very similar (Hotfoot). Lots of sticky goo all over the place to get on your hands. Doesn't look nice either. Personally I think that bird **** is preferable.

If you want to get rid of the birds paint some big eyes on a buoy - the one that you keep handy to attach to your anchor line if you have to leave in a hurry - and suspend it from the end of the boom on a short line. Mine hangs just above the level of the top of the dodger. For some reason it scares the birds: they probaly think someone is on board as it sways with the smallest ripple. I also put some big black 'eyes' on the mooring bouy when it lies on the foredeck. Works well.
