Well I finally found the boat, I've been here before and stumbled at the price negotiation. This time we have agreed the price subject to viewing and subject to survey. Problem is when I go to see her on Friday (shes in France ) any tips on what to look for / at ( sorry guys i'm the same with cars, I want to drive them not build them ) I am meeting a surveyor to brief him on a full survey, any tips?
Superhawk, twin arni drives, 1992 650 hours. full serice history, one carefull owner , ( sounds like the last car !!) I know you guys ( & ladies ) get put upon for all sorts of advice but any input would be very well received and I promise to do a follow up post and let you know how I get on.

get an engine oil test done, this will tell you if anything is wrong with the blocks, go open every cuboard and hatch and look for signs of water or oil where it should not be, and point it all out to surveyor, also ask marina staff about the boat, or dock master or at the local pub, all may have info on boat. sure others on here have other advice for you .

Tony, I dont know whether you know all this already but the surveyor will only survey the hull structure and check whether the equipment is working. More than likely, he will not test or pass comment on the engines and drives. You need a specialist engine surveyor or a specialist service engineer to check the engines and drives and I would definitely reccomend this particularly as the boat is 12 yrs old and the drives are somewhat unusual. This is best done when the engines are under load so good idea to have the engine surveyor along for the seatrial
The other vital issue is paperwork. It is absolutely essential that you arrange to inspect the registration document, builders certificate, previous bills of sale or invoices confirming each and every change of ownership and the invoice confirming payment of TVA/VAT. Firstly, you need to confirm that the owner actually holds title to the boat and secondly you will need originals (not copies) of these documents to confirm your title to the boat after purchase and to re-register the boat in the UK which will probably be necessary to get any finance on the boat for you or any subsequent owners. Also, some French boats are leased so check if there are any outstanding payments
