I have to deliver a boat to the Hamble next September and I'm already suffering a serious case of the heebie-jeebies.
From my observations of the various posts/threads on this site it seems that I will be sailing into yachting hell.
I could be leaving myself open to
rammings,
boat rage,
skippers that don't have a clue about colregs,
MoBo's with bow waves the size of the cliffs of Dover,
Sunsail charter skippers,
Foul smelling brown water,
I.O.W ferries,
Incorrect flag etiquete, i.e I'll be flying the wrong stuff
Skippers that can't moor up unless its in a 20 boat raft,
I've been told that you only use the VHF down there if you want a radio check,
Pubs with watery beer and suspect food,
Yacht clubs that would not let the likes of me through their doors<s>,

Port/stb means bu***r all, just whose got the bigger boat/nerve,
The "can't you see we're racing brigade"

So I would welcome any advice on how to get one yacht safely delivered to a pontoon mooring in the Hamble and how I might avoid any unpleasantness on my one hour "crossing" of the Solent!

Put large blindfold on, and have tape on louder hailer hollering that you are doing simulated night nav exercise, while zig zagging erratically

and you might get lucky.

If you through out all thoughts of following the rules and just try not to hit any of the other boats that should work OK.

Timing your approach for the hours of darkness migt work too. Most of the traffic is sleeping it off and anyone you meet is either bewildered or able.

Make sure that Jimi is safely at home. That should mean the weather is good.

1, Join Seastart and call for a tow to your destination when still tied up.

2, Make the passage at night

3, Apply some transfers on the hull, denoting a well known charter company. This should make you stand on vessel in all situations

4, Call up S/hampton and say you are 50,000 GT vessel laden with hazardous cargo.

5, Mess up boat so it looks really bashed up, light pipe, wear smock, fly bluey and look as if you know colregs better than anybody and sail wherever you want.

6, Position 8 shop dummies on rail, full sail up (with engine assistance natch), fly protest flag, rename boat 'wild rage' or 'Deathwish' or some such and enjoy the intimidation

7, Go on c16, give your position and ask if land mass ahead of you is Novascotia since you've lost your glasses.

Arrange to arrive any Sunday + 1700hrs.
They've all gone home then.

(or even + 1700hrs any other day - usually civil twilight & they don't come out at night
& any that do, will be school boats, IOW Ferries & VLC's [the latter don't usually go into the Hamble])

Would suggest that for total safety you arrange for the boat to be delivered over land....

Overland route

If taking up Aeolus' suggestion, would suggest you passage plan to avoid M27/Hamble junction at around 1700-1900 Fridays, 0800-1000 Saturdays, and 1600-1800 Sundays. Things can get pretty hairy around those times.

Need to pay particular attention to damaging wash caused by commercial traffic on some sections and remember to sound horn twice when leaving motorway exits.

sound signals obligatory on m3 ... one short toot for i am turning right and 2 toots for i am turning left although this signal rarely used these days as m3 only 2 lanes however if overtaking in outside lane 5 short blasts might get you 2 or even 1 finger signal in return

This sounds like the start of a good plan to me, nightime and Jimi asleep.
I think I'll start with that and add any other suggestions as they come in.

Serious bit of advice.
If you are going via Kimelford you can save c 45 mins by going through Cuan Sound. And in Kimelford avoid Bombay Sapphire like the plague. Hope that helps!

From the West

Find the Needles and bear left.

If its at night and you're coming up the Needles channel and you find yourself in a lot of breaking water don't worry...its not the Shingles Bank - its a stinkie passing within 20' quite un-necessarily./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Raggy/stinky drivers

Yotties understand every nuance of the highway code, but don't think it applies to them.

Stinkies have a vague idea that you have to drive on the left, or is it the right? And it's alright to overtake anytime, anyplace, as long as they flash their headlights first.
