Hi - basically I have primed my Volvo Dpg outdrive with 5 coats primocon and I am going to at the weekend apply trilux 33.
Am I right in thinking that a little rub down with wet and dry sandpaper before the first coat of trilux and could I apply 2 coats and then leave it a month and then apply the third coat 24 hrs before the boat gets re launched.

Many thanks for any opinions

jon

Thank you Richard - I wont sand down the primocon I will just use a dust off cloth to remove any dust residue.
would I be ok to apply the first 2 coats of trilux33 a month before it get its 3rd coat ? - I take it the trilux doesn't get sanded down between coats either?

Jon

The Trilux should be applied within the overcoating time specified in the data sheet for Primocon

If the maximum overcoating time ( 1 month) has been exceeded , sand using 80 - 180 grade (grit) paper.

If I read the data sheet for Trilux correctly there is no limit to the overcoating time and the max time before immersion is 6 months

Check the data sheets for yourself. http://www.yachtpaint.com/gbr/diy/Pages/default.aspx

Thank you VicS - yes I am reading that max time before immersion time is 6months and 1 month max between primer and 1st coat or its pressure wash or wet abrade as you stated

Thanks again

Jon

Yes, you don't need to sand the Trilux between coats. The only time you need to sand it is apparently before launch if it has been out of the water for more than 6 months.

The maximum overcoating time for the Trilux is "ext". I've always assumed that this means "extended" but I've never been 100% sure.

Assuming that it means "extended" it means that you can wait a month before putting the final coat on.

(took me 30 mins to press the button due to a phone call so now find that above points have all been covered :))

Thank you Richard - I did wonder what amount of time "ext" was - but does say a month on the data sheets - why don't the manufacturers put it in plain crystal clear English ??

many thanks for the help guys

Jon

I ve never used more than one coat of trilux on the outdrives...if you do it now the outside temp is cool so the a.foul is quite thick.
