Antifouling for big boys............

While down antifouling with the herd yesterday, my neighbour asked the question

"what do they use for antifoul on the big tankers and freighters?"

So, can someone help us? Its not as if they can have a quick lift out and slap a coat on, and any reasonable degree of fouling would really increase fuel consumption and reduce speed - Not good for a commercial carrier!

If they use really good stuff then why can't we?

How do they manage?

Because we keep our boats in creeks and estuaries.
 
same stuff you put on yours does exactly what it says on the tin.
I used commercial antifoul on my boat last season and it works very well, alot better than the blakes yacht antifoul i used two years previous.
 
Durban where my yacht was moored up to 2 years age has major ship repair yards with big dry docks.

There is a good trade in left over antifouling paint from the big ships.

This is all TBT.

Wan't some cheep antifouling gov. Nod nod wink wink
 
Since I actually buy antifouling for big boys, may I offer some FACTS?

1. TBT is NOT used on commercial ships. Whilst the IMO Treaty banning it has yet to be ratified, it is no longer used because shipyards won't handle it.

2. We use cuprous oxide, same as everyone else.

3. Big ships have a harder eroding a/f than yots because they spend more time under way. The speed is such that the eroding aspect is what matters - the barnacles that you might collect in port get hosed off once you are up to 24 knots (containership speed) 18 knots (cruise ship speed) or 14 knots (almost evything else)

4. Blakes is owned by Hempels.

5. International make big ship stuff and yot stuff under the same brand name.

6. We reckon to do between 30 months (realistic) and 60 months (you wish!) between dry dockings.

7. If you plan to spend 90% of your time at 14 knots and are set up for airless spray application from a cherry picker, go right ahead and buy a ton or two of big ship a/f.

How thick does it go on to last 30 months or eroding??

Pretty thick!

Seriously, I ain't going there, because antifouling paint for big ships is a big business, with a host of competing products, all of whose makers can afford very expensive lawyers, but you could reckon three coats at 5 square metres per litre and you would not be too far out.
 
Jotun recommend:-
"Vinygaurd silver Gray primer" then "Super Tropic" (Dark Red)
or for a longer life "Seaquantum Ultra".

Still got TBT on our big ship.Needs changing next refit to comply with IMO.
