I have been told that certain brands of antifoul are not compatable. If your boat has International Antifoul already on it, you cannot apply Blakes Antifoul unless a barrier paint is applied first. Is this true, I do not know who's antifoul is on my recently acquired boat, do I have to put on a barrier coat?

If I was in your position I would remove as much of the old antifouling as is practical and then test a small patch with the new antifouling. If that work you wont have wasted money that could be spent on something else you need. Try the XM errodable antifoul (2 coats), it's cheap and effective.

I'd suggest going back to the gelcoat (however messy that may be) and starting from there.
Tho' I have no personal experience I have heard/read some very negative comments about the XM antifouling.

Incompatability has as much to do with the antifouling type as the make: ie don't try to put hard antifouling over an eroding antifouling - it just comes off.

Thanks Yoda and Charles. What you both say makes sense, being of a lazy nature I was hoping for an economical yet not labour intensive method. Ah well, lets don the face mask, roll up my sleeves and get stuck in.
